Tesco self-service ripped me off?

I was at Tesco's today, first time using self-service. I put in £10 note to pay for 1.40 worth of stuff, so as you would expect I should have gotten £8.60 change....
So, when I popped the tenner in, I got my coins and the receipt.... But there was no £5 note in the vicinity, so I was like ''!!!!!!??'', then I looked behind and there were like 10 people behind me, so I paniced because I knew I had to hurry, I put my stuff in the bag, took the change and slip then walked away, then I looked back again and a worker told me to move along, I moved along and stood and watched the machine and another lady loaded her stuff on it, so I just walked out £5 short....

Not sure if I got ripped off, or whether I just left the note.... It's not an awful lot of money for me, but please help!!

  • Did you look at the bit below the scanner?

The notes fall into a little balcony below the scanning part of the machine.

I am guessing that you may have left the note for the next person or for the SA to pick up. I am sorry :(.

So you didn't think to speak to the member of staff at the self service checkout, and you didn't think to speak to anyone at the customer service desk. Instead you left the store.

I already asked her for help scanning the stuff, TWICE.... so I didn't want to ask again. Silly, but true.

Oh, so it doesn't come out of the place where I popped the tenner into.....? !!!!ing brilliant.
I'll remember to look there next time, if I ever use them again (which I doubt).

I wouldn't have left the machine till the note was in my hand. You shoudl have beckoned the assistant over. Properly now in the pocket in the lady behind you.

I did this first time I used one, but stood there ages til someone told me it was below me.

The notes come out below you, rather than the coins and receipts which come out to the left. Stupid system whoever decided it, but there ya go.

I tend to drown the machines voice out, especially when it keeps saying "Put your item in the bagging area", every 10 seconds :D

I'm sure if I was shorter, I could actually see the thing below the scanner, but noo, I'm 6'4.:(
