A Company change my credit card secure password

Evening.
I need some advice.

I recently made a payment to a real company, a hotel chain. The payment was taken over the phone and I was told that payment was successful.
I then promptly found out that my secure password on the credit card had been changed. I rang the credit card company and they confirmed that it had been an Internet payment and that the password had been reset by the operator at time of payment. I cancelled my card and blocked future payments.

What I want to know is where I stand with the company? I am obviously going to complain & will certainly think about giving details over the phone in future.
Thanks

  • How could the hotel chain change your secure password - all they would have had would be the 16 digit number, start/end date and 3 digit security code?
With you being a first time poster I will give you the benefit of the doubt .. for now.

Actually, it's easy to do - shockingly easy in my very recent experience.

Two weeks ago I tried to make an internet payment with my usual credit card. For whatever reason, there were problems on the site and I had to use a different one. I couldn't remember the VisaSecure password set up on this card because I set it up so long ago, and there was an option to re-set.

I assumed a re-set would send information to my email address. But no.

All it asked me was for the name on the card, the CCV and the card number. That was it. Nothing else. They *may* have asked for my DOB, but I remember thinking at the time that all someone would need is my card to do a re-set! It certainly didn't ask for anything that only I would know, or information that you'd have to try and find out.

I was actually very surprised at the time, but as I was in the middle of Christmas shopping, I forgot about it until I saw this post.

So I don't doubt the OP's authenticity at all!

  • It was not an Internet payment but one done by phone.

The credit card company confirmed it was internet payment, so what the hotel personnel almost undoubtedly did was enter the information onto a website to make the payment. When it got through to the Secure page, they probably did a re-set using only the card details (as I explained) and the payment went through.

My point is that a third party can easily change your password if they have your card details and are using the internet to make the payment - which is what happened to the OP.

    :)

I forgot my password after using Verified By Visa for the first time shortly after it was introduced.

I was surprised how easy it was to reset it: simply enter your credit card number and choose a new password.

Verified by Visa and its Mastercard equivalent are both a total joke and can easily be frauded.

If anyone even thinks this is secure then be assured it is just an illusion produced by the CC companies to make you feel safer.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • Am i correct in assuming that no one has been asked for there user names when going through verified by visa as i find that quite strange as it always asks me to put that in before i can proceed with even getting close to resetting (MBNA card).

No, mine has been done through credit card details only. Never been asked for any information other than on my card that I can remember. :)

When I make a purchase, Verified By Visa tells me what my my UserId is. :rotfl:

To reset the password I only need to supply credit card details, my date of birth and the telephone number the card is registered to. Apart from my date of birth, most retailers I purchase things from would already have those details.

    .

Ditto. If it didn't I'd never remember which variety of my name it is.
