want to pay out of current contract and get a new phone...advice please

My husband is with 3 and he has had lots of problems with his LG520 but now they won't look at it anymore as the litmus paper inside has gone pink. He pays £18 a month and his contract ends in 5 months. So it would cost £90 to leave.

I am new to the idea of Quidco but I believe that you can get cashback on there. Would that be a good idea to use that to get a new contract and use the money to pay off '3'.

Also slighty more problematic- he wants an iphone!! He's prefer the iphone 4 but may settle for the iphone3gs. Is that possible on one of those cashback things??

Sorry am new to Quidco, hope I explained everything clearly and hope something can help. Thank you Moneysavers!:)

Not many deals on iPhone with any of the cashback sites. Also, you can't guarantee if or when you'll get the ££ back. They can come through in a few months, but sometimes that can take a lot longer (the last one I did with Voda took 2 years to pay out, not much use if you want to pay off your current contract).
That's unusual, but cashback should be looked at as a bonus rather than relied on. . .

If you pay off the contract they will probably knock the VAT off so the total to pay should be less than £90. Three do carry the iphone so he could always try them for an upgrade first to see what they can do.

There is an iphone deals thread on this forum but the consensus seems to be that Tesco mobile £349 + 12 months at £20 is the best value iphone 4 deal around at the moment.

Like Jon 01 says, cashback can't always be relied on. I've used Quidco for a few years now without any problems, but sometimes it can take a long time to get the money in your hand.
  • T-Mobile will give you £60 cashback on Topcashback if you take out an iPhone 3GS or 4 contract but the payment time averages 11 weeks. O2 are doing reconditioned 3G handsets with £100 cashback but I reckon that's because there is zero demand for them. Again, though, the average payment time is 11 weeks.

Best bet is to buy a very cheap unlocked PAYG handset to use for a couple of months and then go for an upgrade deal with Three in the final month of his contract.

Forget Quidco too. Use Topcashback. They don't take the £5 fee that Quidco do and are offering a 1% bonus for the duration of December.

T-Mobile are offering £60.60 (increased from £60) for an iPhone contract.

    Just a thought .

Possible to wait until the contract expires , By that date new IPhone 5 may be out .
Possible cheaper IPhone 4 then .

That's true, but it always pays to check both sites as the rates aren't always the same.

Another point I forgot to mention. Topcashback will match any rate that Quidco offer (so long as TCB offer that merchant too). This is a service I have taken advantage of myself.

There a re always new deals available on cashback sites such as Topcash/Quidco and, of course, resellers. They are a bit like DFS sales - always another one next Monday!

It seems a pity to give 3 £90 less VAT for nothing - is there no way that your husband could get a very cheap basic phone for the duration and then keep it as a spare in case his next phone goes down the pan as well?

Thanks everyone for all of your answers! you have given me and my husband sooo much to think about. We decided that yes it was stupid to pay £90 to come out as also we may as use up the minutes rather than pay the money and get nothing! lol So we have dropped his tariff to £12 a month for now and are going to look at our options...and look at some of the things you guys says.

Probably he will keep the mobile for the 5 months on the £12 tariff- may even use it as his business phone and then the new contract will be a private number.

thanks again, i just knew you guys were good at offering advice.:T
