Backing up Outlook

Am at a loss with my MS Outlook. Receiving emails ok, but can not seem to send. Keep getting error message, can't find smtp.

Am now at the stage where I think I will have to reinstall Outlook (not express).

My questions are:

1) Can I back up all my emails, addresses etc, maybe a seperate program exists like mozbackup for mozilla firefox.

2) Is there a downloadable version of Outlook available anywhere. I have the original disks supplied with the pc, but to use these I think it means reformatting, which I am reluctant to do.

3) Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks all.

  • Everything in the error message, not just the error code.
  • Try working through this

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813514

Before you do that though, have you checked the SMTP server address in the account settings in Outlook and can you PING it?
  • Everything in the error message, not just the error code.

    Sorry! Full error message:

TASK 'XXX-Sending and Receiving' reported an error (0x80042109) Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing smtp email server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet Service Provide (ISP).

Have checked SMTP settings, have 5 different accounts. Have tried setting up a new account, no success. Also have tried using my o2 3g data card connection (changing the SMTP to o2 settings as usual) and still no joy.

I am thinking there is a corruption somewhere in Outlook and I need to remove and reinstall.

However, being a technonumpty, I am hesitant about doing this, as I don't want to lose all my email and addresses. Also I don't have any other disc other than the rescue disk supplied, and this I think will reformat the whole of the pc, again I am hesitant about doing this.

    Many thanks for your trouble.

  • Yep sounds like you're stuffed then! Next step would be to go and download Thunderbird and see if that works, if it does then it would seem that Outlook is definitely the problem.

It it doesn't work on either connection then it is obviously a problem at your end and sounds like Outlook.

As for installing Outlook, this is the problem with recovery disks, do you know anyone you can borrow a copy of Office from?

Many thanks. Only recently changed back from Mozilla (which I prefer infinately) to use the diary function/email synchronisation with my PDA.

I can still receive email ok, and use horde to send so I am not compeltley stuffed. At least I can work round the problem until I can find anyone with Outlook as a standalone disk.

Are you sure the default Outlook e-mail account is the one for your current ISP? Most ISP block e-mail relaying as its likely to be spammers.

Try Tools->eMail Accounts->View and Change Accounts and check that the default account matches your current ISP.

You can send using other accounts if you authenticate OK. Select the account, click Change...->More Settings->Outgoing Sever tab, then confirm that "My outgoing server requires authentication" is checked, and input the account details or check "Use same settings as incoming server."
