Heating engineer question

Hi All

In a dispute at the moment with heating company, wont go into details at moment but would appreciate an answer on the below.

If you go to a callout and upstairs Rads are heating but downstairs arent what course of action would you take.

What part if any do you think is faulty?

I'll update with details once the dispute is over

Depending on the age of the boiler and location, it could be the pump.

If the heating is divided up & down it could be a motorized valve.

This is on the assumption this has just happened and has not always happened, or has gradually occurred

Without actually knowing more about the stystem this would be what I would be thinking before I saw the system.

    yes

    Answers as above.

    Not the pump.

Sorry for cryptic nature will reveal soon what the engineer I had out believed it to be, just trying to guage others opinions

After dispute ends, will reveal full story.

First reaction would be the pump, upstairs rads get warm through gravity circulation, downstairs need the pump.

But then you now say it wasn't the pump, so perhaps an old anti gravity valve stuck shut?
  • Agree with above, upstairs can sometimes work on gravity, but I would be looking to see if the motorised valve was passing or stuck. That's the first port of call ( pun intended) but its not always that straighforward.

Wasnt the pump, that was swopped out and didnt resolve.
Engineer decided to keep new pump in my boiler saying hed use my old pump in another job, no charge for pump as not faulty.

All rads switched on - lol

Heat exchanger was the engineers next port of call.

Would a faulty heat exchanger cause only some rads to heat up?

Well that was a barmy idea worth waiting for. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

With one like that, I would have some sport getting him to justify and then I would tell him to take his tool box.

Well, that's about the one thing it can't be.

Part of the system is working, part isn't. Therefore the not-working is unlikely to be common to both parts.
