Car window has fallen into door?!

Hi there

With the weather being the way it is, my electric car windows wouldnt wind down on Friday. Today I drove the car for the first time since then and within 5 minutes the front passenger window just fell into the door, gave me the biggest fright too!

We managed to pull the glass back up into position by taking part of the door cover off, and its now being kept in place with cellotape till tomorrow when I have to get it fixed properly.

Does anyone have any idea if this could be easily repaired and how much it is likely to cost. My insurance said they could only do it if the actual glass is broken which its not, only scratched some off the tint off (grrrr!). Its a VW Golf GTi. Also does anyone have any recommendations of a mobile service I could use to repair at my workplace (cant have any more time off) which is close to Bromley in Kent. Oh and lastly, Im really worried about trying to open the driver side window for fear of it doing the same, is this likely to happen or was this just a one-off?

Thanks!

  • What year GTI? Mk4 I'm guessing... The Plastic Clips fail on the regulater. Common problem. The newer clips are Metal IRC.
  • Yep u guessed right! Was just reading about how common this with MKIV's on a VW forum. So how do I go about fixing this, do I have to get the metal clips from VW and then get a garage to fix it or are there mobile services that can come out to you to do it?
  • The furthest I'm clued up with Golfs is the MK2:rotfl:

Have a look on the MkIVs forum... They'll set you right;)

  • Apparently the winder mechanism on Renault Megane II's are dodgy, my missus' passenger window suffered a catastrophic cable screw up (motor still works) and for the last several months the window's being propped up by a strip of wood.

Save some money and get it fixed when it starts getting warmer outside.

  • Indeed! Perhaps i should kick that fag habit too which is the reason why I tried to open the window (after lighting one doh!)

My MOT is due the first week of Jan, and Im not sure if showing up with a cello-taped window will be a good look :o
  • This happened with my Nissan and it was going to cost me £300 for a new window as you have to replace the whole motor. My brother in law who owns a garage managed to find me a part on ebay and then repaired it for me but it was still about £80 I think.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.....
