They are extremely common over here actually, we have few fast roads and the journeys I will be making are all at 30mph max anyway, but thanks for your opinion - if I lived elsewhere then maybe. Or maybe not as I would probably get a car instead, but just not worth it here.0 -
get some proper biking gear trousers coat etc.
my mate came of his bike at about 30 in jeans and they vanished pretty quick it removed a lot of skin as well and although it was intresting for me seeing his knee cap and shin bone and all the ligamnets hanging out. he spent 6 weeks in hospital have his bum shaved off and stitiched to his leg , Im not sure he was overly impressed
and he had to lie in the road in his pants lol
remember that once you come off the bike there are no safety devices other than what you wearing. hopefully you will never experience this0 -
Some kind of anti-fog treatment for your helmet's visor. Pin Lock (brand) are my recommendation but will probably entail you needing to drill holes in the visor to fit. Or you can get spray on treatments. You don't want a misted up visor in the wet......0

rain x do a great antifog
i use it on all my car windows and i use the rain x repellant on the outside its very good you dont have to use you wipers in the rain unless your going under about 40mph ( so this may not be too effective at 30 on a visor but it will help a bit)0 -
Get proper gear and always wear it.
Decent jacket with CE protection in shoulders, elbows and preferably the back.
Decent torusers with CE protection at knees and hips.
Decent boots are a must to protect you ankles and proper gloves are vital.
I'd also suggest as you're over 16 you'd be better off with a bigger machine. A 125 scooter is just as eay to ride, very economical and at least has a bit of power in reserve for the odd overtake or faster road. Once you've got some experience ont he moped I'd recommend upgradingIt's my problem, it's my problem

I rode a 50cc moped to work every day for 4 years (about 5miles each way, through a town). Only safety gear I had was a helmet (anti-fog is good, but you can just open the visor if it starts to mist up) and a pair of biking gloves. Wore jeans/trousers with a pair of £10 waterproof over trousers, walking boots and a regular waterproof jacket.
Gloves are important as cold hands = slow reactions and less control.
If I were doing it now, I'd wear the same, except I'd get a proper biking jacket with armour in elbows (and preferably the back too)0 -
This is what can happen if you have no gear.

Ok she was travelling pretty quickly when she came off but even on the speeds a moped can travel at I would always wear decent gear.
If you don't want to look too over the top you can always buy a pair of kevlar jeans that will offer far more protection than regular denim. It's my problem, it's my problem

Don't even consider not buying the best possible protective gear you can afford; tarmac is very, very unforgiving.
Beg, steal or borrow the necessary.
It matters not one iota how careful you are.
As the last para says;
My road rash will take several years to completely heal and will never look or feel normal again. I have conquered the only fear that kept me from riding and I will never put myself in the same position to receive such injuries as I have lived through this past year. I stress the importance of wearing full gear to each and every person I ride with, talk to, or even who happens to read my story. I believe that my experiences are a lesson to every type of rider or passenger. I would never wish the pain I felt and still feel today upon anyone in this world. It is completely avoidable with a few extra layers, and I can’t say it enough: it is undeniably worth it to gear up. Everything I have gone through this past year will not be in vain if my testimony is enough to save someone’s skin.0 -
Ideally you want all the gear, even if the quality isn't as good as you would get for a fast bike. As a minimum, get some stout ankle boots that you can wear all day, like workboots (but not steel toecaps as has been said before), a biker jacket and some bike gloves. (Summer ones will be ok in winter with liners underneath unless it is very cold & wet.)
Bike trousers are very useful in an accident but do take the most time to put on and take off, so it is a matter of weighing up risk vs. convenience. That said, with practise you will get to be really quick at putting on and taking off the gear, so it won't take as much time as it does at first when you are getting the hang of it.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0
