Virgin broadband in Bracknell

Thinking of changing Broadband providers near Bracknell pass on Virgin. Have just had a conversation with customer services where they admit they are overcontended in that area so you sign up for up to 50 M but get about 1.

If it's cable broadband it means the are no more free tap & ports in the street cab but the are way's around that.Cable broadband does not run thru the phoneline so if they say 50MB,you should get near as dammit 50MB.

Not looking for an argument spike :)

But in one part of this city, around the University, they did put many back onto 20Mbps because the system couldn't supply the demand for 50Mbps.

Admittedly this was a few months back, so could now be resolved, but you'd never hear about that.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • I had Virgin for years, going back through the NTL days and also through the days when they were the bajillion separate cable companies that mooshed together to form NTL. Their broadband can be fantastic - or it can be pretty crud and it depends who else is sharing the connection around where you are. In my old house the speed used to drop noticeably when certain neighbours got in from work and started caning the connection. If they're admitting there's a problem then there really is.

Good place to ask where you might get more advice is http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/ - lots of Virgin staff and techies post on there (in addition to the customers).

And I'm an ex Cabletel/NTL/VM techie too,A lot of problems are caused by bad installs & the signal levels not being balanced on install,or bad connections.
In a lot of areas of high capacity, like studentville's,the cabs are over subscribed so in order to provide a service, the connection is often split in the cabinet with a standard splitter. That reduces the signal bi 3DBmV for the splitter & 1DBmV per F connector. You then have signal loss over the distance from cab to home, then possibly another splitter, connections & isolator.
That can drop the signal strength quite a lot &,unless the levels are checked & adjusted, can cause problems like slow sppeds, connection drop-outs ect.If the signal is OK at the ETB (Gray box on the house) but low at the service point, then this can be fixed using a Reverse Line powered HDU (Home Distrabution Unit)
