advice needed about being made to stay after work hours.

hi guys this isnt a big deal or notthing megga but its just starting to BEEP me off a bit. i work a minim wage job that i have to get a bus to. i love my job and i dont mind the hike to get in. its just that everyday after work im being forced to stay for a extra 30 mins plus so they can count up the tills and have a witness to check and aprove. im not getting paid for this and it makes me miss my bus home so i have to wait for the next one witch is another 30 mins. i have been told if i dont stay i will be held lyiblae for any money missing from the safe witch seems unfair. its fine if i can manage a lift home but this isnt a option all the time. i just want to finish at 8 like im ment to.i have been told its part of my job but then if it was wouldnt i get paid for the extra half hour plus. and as im told to come in work early everyday. i have a new job starting in jan and i dont want a bad reff. so should i just keep putting up with it? i do really like the people i work with and i dont wanna rock the boat or upset anyone id just like to get home at a resnable hour!

oh year and sorry about the poor spellings :(

well...if you like the job...and can reason with them fine, but if not you only have a few weeks to go, so the end is in sight anyway..

I work lots of hours after hours that i dont get paid for.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

most people do, although to be fair the OP is on minimum wage, so that's not really fair..
  • make a complaint to your head office HR department assuming its a blue chip.

Start keeping a record of your actual finish times, the time at which your till is agreed. This may be useful depending on how this works out.

I think as you are on NMW, they cannot actually make ANY deductions from your pay for till shortages. But I do think you need to be there to have it reocnciled. And I think that this will count as part of your hours, so you could take this forward as a complaint that you are being paid less than NMW

  • I know where your coming from i used to work for a big organisation which required you to start 15mins early and leave 15mins late for till change over on NMW. It wasnt in my contract but were put under pressure by managers. I only lasted 6 months. I wouldnt complain n just stick it out if you have another job to go to and just put it down to experience! PS dont worry about spelling!

Maybe I am old fashioned but if I am not paid then I don't do the work.

I agree but the workplace has evolved, unions are powerless and so such deals get done.

  • If you add your extra hours in then you are being paid LESS than minimum wage - which as we know is illegal [as mentioned] and any till stops also take you to less than minimum wage [again, illegal].

But you have to balance that against the reference.

I'd call the new employer and find out if they have the reference for your new job yet and if so, then make your decision.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
