Freeview - "check antenna connection"

I've been away from my home for a few months having medical treatment. When I left the TV with freeview box was working fine. Now I've come back, and when I turn the TV on I can't get any channels, and when I do a scan on the freeview box it says to check the antenna connection.

I've unplugged everything and plugged it in again, which is about the extent of my technical knowledge, and I still get the same message. I have googled this problem and get some very confusing answers about different types of aerials and very expensive solutions:eek: Surely if it was working before I should be able to get it working again? Can someone explain in simple terms for a bear of little brain? Thank you!!

Try plugging the aerial directly in the back of the TV, do you get a picture?
I'm assuming you are in an area where the analogue signal has not been switched off.

Have you checked that your aerial has not moved?

Do you still get terrestial TV in your area? If so, plug the antenna straight into the TV an see if it receives anything. That will at least tell you if there is anything coming down through the aerial.

  • I'm on the Isle of Wight.....I think we still have analogue!

Just tried plugging directly into the TV and all I get is a blue screen :(
  • Ok....I think this means it's a problem with the aerial, right?

It's been like it for 3 weeks and I am having trouble getting my landlady to fix it....just wanted to make absolutely sure there was nothing I could do!

    Almost certainly it is.

Darn it. I guess the heavy snow we had a few weeks back has dislodged it or something. Still, at least this means it is my landlady's problem to fix and not mine. I hope she gets round to it soon!

    Thanks everyone.

    I concur.

Just one more thing, does the aerial lead come in through the wall or do you use a patch cord from a wall socket?
In which case try swapping it.

  • Thanks penrhyn....it comes in through the wall so I don't think there's much I can do.

Does anyone know if getting a small indoor aerial thing would work? I am so frustrated not having TV! (I have plenty of other things to do but I live on my own and sometimes TV is nice! And watching it online is making me go over my internet usage and costing me money)

Indoor aerials rarely work well, particularly for digital reception.

OTOH, if you are very close to the transmitter, there's a chance.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
