There were also those ice fairs and some very cold winters.

Thames iced over enough for a winter fair to be held on the river in central London. Thats not happened this year so I guess we are still warmer

I guess this will never happen now though because of all the residual heat produced in the city

plus the river flows much faster nowadays, due to the wider spans on the main bridges

Is it just me or does the OP omit any mention of global warming? It's only those replying that mention it.

ETA: Ah, I see. It's the link.

it's in the post too i believe.

climate change scientists believe uk is likely to see arctic temperatures more frequently as the gulf stream that prevents us sharing the same weather as siberia (note latitude) is weakening. what percentage you think is due to human activity and what would be happening anyway is a political hot potato.

philip hammond is supposed to be asking scientists if there has been a "step change" in the weather to see if more cold weather investments should be made.

which scientists he asks and what they say will be interesting. afaik if they advise change it will be a first in terms of preparing the country for scientifically predicted climate change.

I'm sure the 'scientists' he asks will tell him not to worry, and that the Government doesn't need to spend millions on plans for more severe winters.

"The swelling ranks of sceptical scientists is now the largest whistle-blowing cohort in science ever seen. It includes some of the brightest: 2 with Nobel Prizes in Physics, 4 NASA astronauts, 9000 PhD’s in science, and another 20,000 science graduates to cap it off. A recent Senate Minority Report contained 1000 names of eminent scientists who are skeptical, and the term “professor” pops up over 500 times in that list."

Still, I'm sure Mr Codpiece knows better.

Well, he does have every major world scientific institution on his side.

The names been changed, it's now "Climate Change".

Remind us when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change changed it's name.

It's the blind self-c0nfidence that makes me chuckle the most.

As in this from one of the high priests of warmism, back in 2000: "Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past"

    http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/snowfalls-are-now-just-a-thing-of-the-past-724017.html

    So, what changed?

Nothing, an actual quote from the Met Office scientist:

Heavy snow will return occasionally, says Dr Viner, but when it does we will be unprepared. "We're really going to get caught out. Snow will probably cause chaos in 20 years time," he said.

He was dead right, it's just happened 10 years sooner.

A little longer than that, actually. Which is just one of the places where warmism fails to convince. Hence the attempts by Hansen and co to pretend the Mediaeval Warm Period didn't exist.

    That's not true.
