American Airlines $500 voucher

Hi
I'm a bit confused. As I was put on a different flight last summer I was given an AA $500 voucher as compensation. The voucher expires on 8th May 2011 but I would like to use it for 31st May.
Does the one year validity of the voucher mean my flight has to take place within this year?
Thanks

You must use (i.e. redeem) the voucher within one year, but you can travel after that year has ended.0
