I might be a bit behind the times but are small automatics not gutless and relatively thirsty? What about hiring a car (auto) for a few weeks or take taxis?

Cost of change will also be a factor, but for 5 weeks I think i would be tempted to just rearrange my life a bit but I guess you will have to do the sums.

As with any car - fuel economy depends on the driver...

but yes, a valid point - rearange life for the few weeks, unless you intend to keep the car for a while after...

Polo auto's are good. Avoid any silly gimicky ones like Fords Durashift or other CVT efforts which are bad...

My friend is selling a K reg Rover 216GSi auto for a few hundred quid. MOT til end of the year too.
