Small Automatic Car

I am wondering whether to buy a small automatic car as I have a broken ankle and will be in plaster for another 5 weeks and will then need physiotherapy. I currently drive a Kia Picanto manual which suits my needs but have not heard good reports of the automatic.

I am considering a Nissan Micra or a Daewoo. If any one has any advice or other ideas I would be pleased to hear from you.

This site has been wonderful for the three weeks when I have been unable to even put my foot to the ground, it helped to keep my sanity!

    Hello su3

I think you'll get more responses in the 'Motoring & Public Transport' board, so I'll move your thread across for you.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

    Regards

If its suggested that you don't drive a manual, you have no other choice.

A friends mom drives an old Micra 1.0 Auto on an 'M' plate. She's had it since 1996 and its still going strong. It happily whizzes around town and is comfortable (if a bit noisy) on the motorway. The gearbox is smooth and the car is simple to drive. Best thing is that even as an auto, it still returns 40mpg average.

The other alternative to try and keep the fun in driving is a Citroen C2 as they offer a paddle shift gearbox (like a F1 car).

    Thanks Balsingh

Good to hear someones genuine experience. Particularly impressed with the MPG as that is what I had heard let down the Kia. Never heard of the C2 so will investigate
    Thanks

MrsSmartprice has a C2 with the paddle shifts and loves it. You can have it in semi-auto or fully auto mode, and they are quite quick too.

Another option is a Smart as none of them have clutches. They have a semi/fully auto 6 speed box, and are fine if you only need a town car.

Thanks for the replies, have gone out and hopefully got a good deal on the Nissan Micra. Found someone who was very pleased with their's, so now hope I have done the right thing. It was really good on the test drive I even think my son might approve!

I have fractured a bone in my left foot. I have an automatic car. Can I still drive as I don't need my left foot? Just wondering as it is easier for me to get to work. TIA kal25

Yes of course, there are many permanently disabled drivers that drive with one leg in a standard automatic car.

You can check with the DSA or DVLA to verify.;)
