"dirt trapping" door mats- do they work?

Hi all

Now i have spent the whole of last week putting down a solid oak floor in the living room - i want to keep it clean and looking new.

I have seen various places selling "dirt trapping door mats"...

do they work? can anyone recommend one?

how much should i expect to pay?

I like the look of this one..as it would match the decor in kitchen / living room but don't want to buy if it is a waste of time and a "normal" door mat traps as much dirt as these "revolutionary dirt trapping ones"..

any advice appreciated..

  • oh yes they definitely work. I have several and got them direct from turtle mats. They stay where they are put and they wash very well. I wouldn`t be without them
  • Lakeland do slightly cheaper ones (including dearer runners) - been thinking about treating myself as I have laminate floors and the snow/grit that everyone seemed to bring in on their shoes was horrendous - we ended up putting down bath towels! Will see if I can find the linky....

Yes they do work, we've had one for years at the back door to catch the dirty dog paws on the way in. Need to make sure you place it well or buy one big enough so all four paws hit it on the way in. They last for ages, and wash easily in machine so although it does seem expensive, its money well spent.

I have a turtle one..bought direct from their website. http://www.turtlemat.co.uk/

I just have one of the classic ones...cheapest ;)

  • They do work, but they're not miracle workers :) We renovated the original wooden Victorian floors in our house, and have a policy of removing outdoor shoes at the door :D

We have a proper one at the mo and dont think its half as good as the one we got from Wilkinsons which was half the price. Think they are £10 for the large size.

i have a turtle mat at the bck door to protect the amtico on the kitchen floor and it fab - washes really well and seems to pick up the wet better tha other types. DH in his wisdom bought an ordinary coir mat for the front when we had our wood floor done and its not nearly as good

We've had the runner for a couple fo years and it's very good.

Incidently it was great when the builder over the road got his van stuck in the ice last week. We put it upside down under the front wheels and he drove over it

They work, but shoes off at the door works even better. A combination of the two is ideal. Obviously making the gas man take his shoes off at the door is a bit much but family members could do this and that will remove 90% of the dirt at a stroke. I've always done this, irrespective of what kind of flooring we've had. Who wants smears of dog poo and road grease tracked all over the house after all?

  • I have a small turtle mat in plain 'Bark' colour, and a larger patterned one also. I wished I had not gone for the patterned one as it looks dirty all the time , because the lighter colours show the dirt up :(.
So yes, they do trap dirt! However I do really love the bark coloured one, it is a warm and inviting colour that goes well with our laminate. It washes up like new. Would get another.
Sometimes the size of the mat you require has a bearing on choice though. I like the sound of the wilkinson one, it seems to be 80% cotton and very cheap :).
