Alert received from eBay ....

Hi,
I've just received an Alert email from eBay entitled "NOTICE: eBay Communication Partner Warning" and it says the following:

"Our records indicate that you recently sent an email to or received an email from mcd2552 through the eBay email system (for example, you may have sent an email to this member through Ask Seller a Question or received an email from this member through Contact eBay Member).
Sometimes eBay accounts are used to send email solicitations for transactions outside of eBay, or to send unrelated questions in hopes that you will respond so that the other party can obtain your email address. We wanted you to be aware of the potential fraud risk these solicitations pose and encourage you to be cautious about the email you received from this member.
Please keep in mind, sales that take place outside of eBay are not eligible for any eBay or PayPal protective services and you run the risk of losing your money or your item if you complete these transactions. We would encourage you to review the eBay pages related to Fraud Protection at the address provided below for information on steps you can take to ensure that your transactions are successful:

Should you have paid for this item, please write with details through our "Contact Us" form found on the page below:
http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/contact_inline/index.html
Please select "Report problems with other eBay members > Fraud concerns for buyers > You paid for an item but never received it"
If you have paid for the item through PayPal, you may find the following page useful:

Regards,
eBay Trust & Safety"

I have no record of contact with this ebayer at all although I have recently reported someone who contacted me requesting i send my item to nigeria (of all places!) and i haven't bought anything on ebay for months now, i have only been selling.

Should i be worried?

I received the same email this morning but for a different address. I had recently received a lot of "questions" on my listings which turned out to be unsolicited selling or maybe "phishing" including one from the address in the ebay message. If you're selling a lot I'm sure you've had the same.

I imagine that when someone who is not a member of ebay sends you a message, it is flagged up by ebay as suspicious and they are only giving a warning.

Just make sure you don't reply to any emails like this that you receive (well not from your email account) as it could result in a lot of spam.

I was quite alarmed at first by the email too but I haven't done anything more about it and just to be on the safe side haven't clicked on the links on the ebay message (call me paranoid).

    I would just ignore it!
  • you can send the email to ebay and they can verify whether or not it is a genuine ebay email, ive done this on more than one occassion and they have always turned out that they have not come from ebay
finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!
  • go to the ebay 'help' page and its question number 1, must be a commonly asked question
finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!

Even though i received it in my normal email account AND in my ebay email account?
  • Not sure about that? all the ones ive had only went to my email address, but im sure they wouldnt mind if you queried it, I would question it just to be on the safe side. or else email them and say you are unsure of why they have contacted you as you have no knowledge of ever having contacted the member before

My email was in both my email and ebay account. The unsolicited selling 'question' I got did have a red banner under their name saying 'not an ebay member'. It might be worth reporting because it could be that the messages were done by the same people (although in your case you say you didn't get one) in order to give you more motivatation to click the links on the ebay email (or you could call me really really paranoid!)
  • There was a post on here recently regarding an email someone had received which ebay said was not from them. Quite a few replied that this is actually ebay's standard response when you forward emails to their spoof email department (or whatever it is called) regardless of whether it really did come from ebay or not (so that's helpful of ebay!!)
