Still haven't decided what laptop to but my sons and it is getting very near to when Santa is due.
I know currys isn't the most popular store with techies, but I need to get it from somewhere I can collect rather than risking delivery with weather as it is.
Budget is around £450 and would prefer buy now pay later option if possible. I am after a decent allrounder. Sons would love a gaming PC, but they are well out of the budget and they have their XBOX for gaming anyway.
Please help, the more I look, the more confused I get :(

If you are really only interested in the processor comparison then http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ will tell you but that isn't usually the only thing you need to look at.
  • well the i3 cpu is superior BUT the athlon laptop has a far better graphics solution unlike the i3 which has pure integrated graphics. so if they ever thought about gaming on the laptop the i3 would be hopeless, gimme me a moment i iwll take a look at currys to see what would be best at that budget

Cheers, any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am open to suggestions on makes and models. We also have comet and argos nearby so I could go there also.

  • well looking so far upping the budget at 499 is this Acer Aspire 5553

    (just add www to link)

    .argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5083400.htm#pdpProductReviews

It basically has identical/similiar specs to the other laptops you posted (same screen size/windows 7 etc..)
but it packs a quad core cpu, this might not make much difference tbh, but in anything that can use more than 2corsed it will beat dual core counterparts.
It also has the 4250 instead of integrated gpu. Bear in mind i am not saying this will be good for games but for stuff like 'the sims' and less demanding games it will do much much better than integrated graphics.

I will keep looking, but bear in mind i am no expert and usually for this kind of thing i will research heavily
  • looking at argos this one is popular and i can see why
    Samsung R580

    w.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5083871.htm#pdpFullProductInformation

Basically it uses i3 330M so solid cpu but it packs nVIDIA GeForce 310M so actually it would be able to handle modern games with settings low-med.
I know you mention you are looking for all rounder and this isnt supposed to be gaming laptop/pc but honestly if they are boys and they play 360 THEY WILL try to play games on laptop especially as there are so many free games available on pc and games are also far far cheaper.
I would deffinately recomend this over the ones you linked. tbh any laptop can handle the basic browsing ms word etc... stuff you could spend half money for something for that but this samsung ones can handle games at similiar price 499 quid. so if you can stretch to that i would say this one is just superior.
also the same model on amazon is actually slightly more expensive so the argos price is reasonable imo.

again just to clarify i wouldnt consider this to be a 'gaming laptop' but it's ability to cope with games is 1000 times better than what integrated graphics is capable of :)

There isn't a great deal of difference between Intel's Core i3 integrated graphics and AMD's HD4250, but the Intel processor is far superior to the AMD one.

Intel will launch their new range of processors in a couple of weeks at the CES. They are a direct replacement for their mid-range processors such as the i3. If you wait there might be bargains to be had, or faster and possibly more energy efficient ones for a similar price.

looking at that it seems intel onboard has come a long way :) but bear in mind a lot of the games benchmarked are heavily dependant on cpu so the results may be skewed as it doesnt post the full spec of the system benchmarked

With AMD graphics you get better future support and more features such as OpenCL.

PC World had a better model for £549, 5553G

4gig ram, dual ati graphics 4250 and 5470 switchable.

tbh i have to disagree with that, best to say they are as good as each other but personal experience nvidia drivers tend to be more 'consistent' also nvidia gpu does support opencl

well if op could get to a pc world that would open up some options maybe but currys and pc world tend to have the similiar stuff.
