Old Mobile Phone Bill

I've been contacted by a debt collection agency on behalf of O2 who are claiming that I have an unpaid phone bill of £520 . According to them this was accrued over a period from March 2006 to January 2007.

First I heard from them regarding this account was approx Sep 09 and it has taken until this week for them to produce statements regarding this account.

Call me forgetful but I don't have any recollection of this account or debt ever existing. Why didn't they request it earlier?

Where do I stand on this? Please help because my blood pressure is going through the roof!!:(

Do they have the right info? Address (either where you are now or were back then), dob, bank acc info? It could be a fraudulent acc which used your info (how did you get rid of bills and statements back then?). You could contact O2 and ask them to pass it to their fraud dept who will run a number of checks, and also tell the agency that you feel this acc isn't yours and you've been the victim of fraud/ID theft...

So you are not saying categorically that you didn't have an O2 account or that you don't owe this money? Before you call "fraud", get a copy of some of the numbers called during this period and see if you recognise any or them.

Also as O2 for details of any moneys they have received on this and from which bank/account.

It is also very peculiar that they let an account run for almost a year without cutting it off - or perhaps they did after a couple of months and the charges relate to rental.

As far as the debt possibly being out of time, the statute of limitations is 6 years.
  • I also think its peculiar that they let the account run for almost a year.

The debt recovery company they've using is really on my back but all they can give me is a monthly balance statement. It includes number of calls made, data, texts but its not an itemised bill with individual numbers on there.

I can remember having a orange and 3 mobile account but this came like a bolt out of the blue. If the account ever existed, they say it did, then i have no record of it. It would take me an absolute age to check through all my old accounts to see wether any payments were made.

I could of paid the balance with a cheque, credit card, partner, direct debit standing order etc.

I am disputing their take on the matter and see wether we can reach an agreement. Any further advice would be appretiated.
