K700i - using real music for ringtones

I have got a Sony Ericsson K700i, which is on contract to Vodafone.
I got it partly to use real music for ringtones... (sad I know), However....
Vodafone state there have been software problems and licensing problems or something (I was already getting lost at this point...)

I was advised to get a blue tooth connector for my PC to talk to my phone - which I have, and they are the best of friends.
However I still don't have the ability to use real music on my phone as when I download music it on to it, in, it appears, any format, it has it on there, and will play, but won't let me use it to set it as a ring tone - if that makes sense.!

I am getting a bit annoyed really ! Can anyone help by giving me an idiots guide to how I can succeed.

Thanks

  • Vodafone have disabled this feature on the K700i.

I got one some months ago and discovered the same thing, I called them up and cancelled.

I claimed that they had mis described the goods as it wasn't a K700i but rather a modified version with a lower spec, they advertise "K700i" but that's not actually what you get. It's like a ford garage advertising a brand new car and failing to tell you that they've removed the seats!

I got an o2 one and it works just fine.

i have k700i on o2, it works fine
go to file manager>select your song>more>use>set as a ringtone.
the only annoying thing in this phone is battery life, and the video quality
Life should not be taken seriously, as no one would get out alive

option is disabled on voda branded k700i phones
you would need to reflash the s/w to get the full menu (and remove the voda branding)
you would need a cable and 2 credits for total multiserver
    see here:

  • I think the face off thing sounds like a good option but....

How do I do it ? I am a complete technophobe, and I am concerned I may lose all my data on my phone that is stored already... so how does this work ? HELP ?!

  • Yep, you need it unlocked, the vodafone software ruins the k700i, makes the menus and icons really crappy! Unlocked it is probably the best phone available at the moment.

You can get it unlocked by other people too, try https://www.gsmcrazy.co.uk if you e-mail them they can help I think...

There is no need to get your phone unlocked just to enable you to use MP3 files as ring tones. As a non-techie you may struggle to acheive this yourself, but instructions can be found on the web.

In short, Vodafone have prevented any AAC (converted from MP3) from being used as a ringtone if it does not have a particular characteristic - that being a protected 'bit'. It is possible to introduce this using software.

Send me a private message if you would like me to do this for you. Sadly I do not have access to a K700 on Vodafone so cannot test, but I'm willing to try...!

Ok - so have downloaded the SE drm on to my computer, and seemed to have converted an mp3 to an dm file..... so, being a non techie... could you now explain how you download it in the 'standard' way and get the file from the drm to my phone !!!! I don't see how you can do it.....
The only way my phone and computer are buddies is through blue tooth connection.

    HELP !!!!

The method you use to transer the music file to your phone is not relevant - if you are using Bluetooth just transfer it as you have previously, ensuring the file goes to your music folder. The file should then be available to be played as a ring tone. Let me know if you have any success in getting this to work.
