There are reasons to get boilers/gas appliances serviced annually. They tend to soot up, get clogged and start giving off carbon monoxide.
Brag all you want when you are found dead on the floor by neighbours weeks later from a blocked flue !
I dont give a toss whether you argue for or against condensing boilers, as long as you stay safe and get them serviced each year
Made news by people like BG and ilk to make you pay £20 a month for someone to come around with a vacuum cleaner every year to de-soot your boiler.
I do ours every year with no problem at all.
As for the blocked flue, stiff yard brush gets rid of the leaves the tree huggers in my parish insisted on leaving. Really green them twits are!0 -

Most people are not as 'perfect' as you freddie !
Yes those competant enough to clear the flue outside from leaves and vacuuming the burner assby, can POSSIBLY save the expense of a service. If you read my further post you would see that I do not advocate servicing contracts myself, I think they are a waste of money too, but this does not detract from the fact that there are many thousnads of boilers out there that are unsafe and have not been serviced. How do you clear out the flue if you are on the 10th floor of a block of flats freddie? It is people like yourself that show that , yes it is possible to do a 'partial service' to a boiler or fire, but do you have the correct analyising tools to check that the gas/air mix of the boiler is correct, whether the flue is actually pulling correctly and whether the burner is working correctly with a blue flame. Look at some of the other threads on here and you would be horrified.
Listen you can get engineers to service your boiler and fire for around 50 quid, so dont go to the expense of £20 a month contracts, ask friends/family if they use someone good and check them out on the gas safe register, someone who doesnt give you a receipt is not what they are made out to be.
In my working experience in gas appliances which spans 20 years, I can tell within 20 seconds which customers are going to be a pain, they are usually retired engineers, lecturers and old codgers, who all think they know better.
With regards to a condensing boiler do you on your 'service'
1. take the sump off and clean it
2.take the heat exchanger aprt, clean and inspect it
3. clean gas valve, burner, check electrodes and insulation.
4. clean and check the DHW filter
5. Use a flue gas analyser
6 check gas pressure to boiler and all seals inside the boiler
What % of the public who have a boiler can do thet correctly and safely? Not many I guess.
You acn save money on most things in life, but putting your life at risk for the sake of a few quid is not one of them.0 -

It's a crazy old World, isn't it? For instance, i know someone who has their boiler serviced regularly but point blank refuses to invest in a CO2 alarm.0

Lol do you all still drive around in your first cars because of the carbon footprint of making a new one, sitting on your 1975 choc brown and orange sofa, watching your crt tvs?
Take your efficiency figures with a pinch of salt, although most 20+ year old non fanned flue boilers will be 55 - 65% efficient this is before the heat exchanger filled with scale and dirt. That will certainly further reduce efficiency. Also the likelihood is that the system controls will be outdated and also wasteful.
The original advice may not be cost effective in one persons situation but that doesn't mean it's not good advice to consider.0 -
I moved house and now have a glowworm 30 ci which is a pile of crap and is only two years old, it takes ages to heat water and has broken down 2 times since I moved in November. Pressure problems seem a big issue with this boiler.
I have came from a house which had an old Johnson warm air unit in it and a water heater and Id switch back to Warm Air in a heart beat plus my Gas Bill has risen greatly ( I Don't have a yearly Consumption but I have went from £39 p/m to £60 p/m with taking mothly meter readings.) Im not impressed at my first experiance with a combi. His Heart Proved He Was A RedSuarez, SuarezWe Bought The Lad From AmsterdamWe Know He's Not a Chelsea Fan.Fernando Torres = El Judas0
