What never happened to the Nuclear Winter0
-
I take your point and dont dispute anything you say but nevertheless,i do think there are comparisons to be drawn.Comparisions with the US are pointless. They have the infastructure and plans in place since that amount of snow is routine for them and happens at least 6 times every winter. Snow ploughs go out on all streets multiple times a day when it's bad, when was the last time you saw a snow plough here? They do main motorways rarely and that's it.
And since that happens to be the place my Dad works, and I myself have lived there, I know what i'm talking about.
I therefore give you my Winter plan for making sure the UK runs smoothly.
A) All major hub airports eg Heathrow,Manchester and the biggest Scottish airport to be fully equipped and trained to deal with major snow downfalls as per other countries. All other airports to be sacrificial and to shut or manage as necessary.
B)Make it the law, punishable by fix penalty, that every household, shop an office should clear or arrange to keep clear of snow, the path and frontage of their property unless they show good reason for not doing so.
C) Make it the law, punishable by fixed penalty, that no vehicle shall take to the public highway unless it is first fully cleared of snow and that all windows and lights are clear.
D)When snow and/or ice has a significant impact on major routes and motorways, a fixed maximum speed limit of 40mph shall be imposed and offenders prosecuted/fined. A minimum distance rule between vehicles to be imposed.Automated average speed cameras to be used on motorways to trap offenders.
E)In the long term, seek to re-nationalise the railways so that we have a fully integrated national rail service once again which is wholly responsible for rails, signalling and rolling stock. Its sole purpose shall be to engender engineering excellence and to provide a quality, reliable service to the public in a cost effective manner.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -

C_Mababejive Dont forget F) Vote Labour and keep the red flag flying
Seriously though, C is already the law.
I do agree with your measures, though I would try to be more carrot than stick.0 -
Further tips for gridlocked Britain...
For the airport chaos, I've been shopping on the internet and found the following products..

High volume of deliveries combined with bad weather don't make it easy for couriers to cope, next year start earlier perhaps? I hope the gifts arrive on time.
To be fair I did say I ordered on the 23rd November so hardly left it last minute, especially when it says on their website standard delivery was 2-3 days and dispatched within 24hrs!
Generally annoyed, yes Ive had a lot of snow (best part of 6 inches in places) however and this is what annoys me more than anything - the roads are clear, gritters with snow ploughs etc (only the tiny side streets arn't clear) and yet thats meant my postman hasn't come since thursday - I live on a main road.....its not like they have no post to deliver - heck there was a postman in town collecting post from the postbox wearing shorts! but it just seems that they are reluctant to actually deliver the post - probably health and safety I do not doubt.
Don't even get me started on the school being shut!
Don't get me wrong Im certainly not a bah humbug (even if I do sound it) - Infact I went out to play in the snow yesterday - It just really frustrates me that where I live (in a city) the roads are kept very well gritted and it still seems that everything needs to come to a complete stop because there has been snow....
My Italian friend finds it hilarious - back in Italy she lives at the foot of the swiss alps and they often get a couple of feet and they just get on with it.....MFW 2020 #111 Offset Balance £69,394.80/ £69,595.11

Agreed...it IS 'elf n safety which is preventing grid locked Britain from operating.
If i were a postie, I'd have some of these for winter. No chance of slipping.

And your feet would be soaked and frozen within minutes.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
I would certainly support the UK spending money to put winter plans in place. They always say it costs the economy so much money for a single day of disruption that we'd soon be back in credit

Walking boots or trail trainers do the job perfectly well when combined with half an ounce of noddle.0
