I'd have bought her all value brand and put it in the hamper instead. No point wasting money on the ungrateful.
How about next year saying that you are not doing presents at all and are donating to charity instead and tough if she doesn't like it
Present her with an oxfam loo or cow and say you thought of her when you chose them :T 0 -

You could always give her that slow cooker you got in February.. after all if it was good enough for you its gonna be more then good enough for her..0 -

my MIL is the same. Last year we suggested that they just buy presents (aged 3 and 18 months) for the girls and not bother for the adults. She agreed then 2 weeks before xmas started ranting and raving about how she had always bought her son and present and was not going to stop now, so it was agreed to buy a token gift.
As I work weekends and do not drive it meant I had to rush around our very limited high st to buy them something. The gifts they bought us are still unused in the cupboard. The same is expected this year so may have to recyle things. Money is very short this year due to gas and electric DD going up etc, I really hate having to waste £50 on tack that is not used, but as MIL says Christmas is about presents and giving!!!
And there wsa me thinking it was about gods only son being born, peace and goodwill to all men - shame on me0 -
I have really enjoyed reading this it confirms my belief that Chrismas and present really has gone mad in this country. My family is Danish and they love home made things so I have no problem with giving them that. I think the MIL and FIL sounds really awfull and ungrateful. I have never heard of anyone giving presents in Feb and then thinking that will count as xmas.
I am lucky my Inlaws are great and this year they are giving us money as we will be with my BIL in South Africa. I will get them something nice but they are getting old and it is a hassle for them to get to the shops.
Well this is getting far too long just wanted to put in my vote for home made presents they are great.
A few ideas for home made presents for a hamper:
Home made roasted and salted nuts with spices.
Jam (all those free blackberries)
home made biscuits (get the kids to help)
My mum also used to give someone a kit to bake a cake or bread incl all the flour, tray, recipie etc.Save £12k in 25 No 49

Now, I'm not going to go on a great religious rant, but it really gets me how people seem to forget why we celebrate Christmas in the first place!
My SIL is just the same. We visited the other week and our niece's list was in prime position for us to look at and nothing was under £15! Now, DH and I can't afford £15 on anyone this year and we have told them all so, but trying to tell my SIL that, well she was having none of it! My mum tried to suggest that we spend £5 on each other this year, but that was totally ignored. This is what gets me about my brother and SIL, they haven't taught their 2 children to be grateful for things and to look after them and so we have taken the view that until they are, then we will spend a small amount on them, still getting presents relating to their favourite cartoon or programme, just not what's on the list. My mum has finally realised this and so will only be spending a small amount on them.
So I am in total agreement that it is the thought that very much counts and not the price tag!Official DFW Nerd Club #20  Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts
