Bloody good idea......I'm off to donate my MiL to a chairty...wonder if the will collect her or I'll have to take her myself?:rotfl:
 My apologies...yes it is a good idea, but I don't think they'd be allowed to sell MIL's due to the 'Dangerous Weapons Act'
Now the January news will be full of : 'Charities are being overrun by donations of Mothers-in-Law...We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment0 -
Yep. My MIL once bought her own present and then just presented the bill to us!!! She used to write a list of things she wanted and the prices (without us asking for suggestions I might add) until I told my husband that it wasn't on. At the time we were very short of money. If she goes on and on about the cost of things she's bought you just say that "it's the thought that counts".dlb wrote:This year i have been making home-made hampers for the people i buy for thanks to all the great ideas you have all given me. But i am so worried about the one for my FIL + MIL, It looks beautiful and is the most expensive one i have made, it has lots of food items, pickles, expensive t-bags,biscuits ect and 2 books and a scarf for MIL.
The thing is she the MIL is so materialistic, she normal TELLS US in august what she wants for xmas and it is never cheap!! So beat her to it this year and told them before they told me that we had sorted out their xmas pressie.
She has phoned me every week asking what it is, i havent told her told her it is a surprise, but she keeps asking.
She bought us a slow cooker in Feb for this xmas!! We always get our gift very early they get them in the sales which is great but i wish they would wait until dec to give them to us!!!
Now i am so worried as i know she isnt going to be impressed with the hamper as it wouldnt be what she picked herself. She keeps dropping hints about how much they have spent on us in past years.
Does anyone else have relatives like this???0 -
PS. Maybe next year you should buy her one of those charity gifts for xmas. You know a goat for a family in a third world country. Then she might learn that she's truly lucky.
Just read sasser's comment - great minds think alike!0 -
Maybe you could "volunteer" her to work at a charity overseas - then she would not spoil everybodies Christmas and she might appreciate what she has got."This site is addictive!"

When my grandma was alive she bought presents for everyone. She had a large family and not a lot of money. She'd give hankies or socks usually. One year just after one of my cousins got married, his wife thanked my grandma for their presents, saying 'even if it wasn't much'. I can tell you we all thought she was a snob anyway but we have no time for this woman. We still talk about it and it must be more than 10 years ago now that she said this.0

My inlaws are exactly the same as dlb's. Mind you they don't tell us in August. But we told them this year as they can never make their mind up about what they want, we're giving them vouchers - only to hear my MIL last night say that she wants a lamp (said quietly to my hubby), but there's no way I'm getting it, they'll have the vouchers and pick their own. I've had enough of them over the last couple of years (I kept my mouth shut, and bit my lip for too long with them) so decided that it's vouchers or nothing, take it or leave it. As for my SIL - well we told them what we got her (now I won a beautiful prize worth over £150 back a couple of months ago) so she's getting that for Christmas as it's just what they want - oh no my FIL thought that was too cheap (even though it's brand new, still boxed, not opened etc etc) just because it was won. He got the hump see because he thought we were spending more money on her than them so I told him I'd won it (which I did). Nah, some inlaws are a pain in the rear, but we grin and bear it cos we love our hubbys......

One thing that really gets my back up though, is when the ask you what you've got the "kids" (Nephews) and when you tell them it's like "Oh well they want this..... blah blah.... argos catalogue - £110 and we've told them that you'll get it for them" - ARRRGGHGHGHGHGHGGGGHHHHHEveryone has a photographic memory, it's just some of them don't have film.0 -

This is a contact for a scheme which allows one grandmother to sponsor another who is desperately struggling to survive. Perhaps you would like to pay for the first year of this on behalf of your own children's grandmother who may then continue to do this of her own volition in years to come (interesting to see her reaction if you offered to continue it year on year as her present). However, your MIL sounds as if her head is so far up her 8888 that she can see the back of her own teeth! I would be wondering if I'd want a woman like this to have any influence over my children in case her attitudes rub off on them.0 -

I would be inclined to play a little trick on them, buy them a household item like an iron in the sales and put it away, when the MIL gives you your christmas present next february turn round and give them their present and say cause you are so kind in giving us an early present we want to return the favour
