this year we have money from the sale of my house. I moved to be with oh. we going to put my money into our new house and build a extention etc.. but family members just see pound signs and ive overheard them say oh we going to get a great christmas present this year they got loads of money.. they in for a shock as the money is spoken for and they will get what they normally do, and in some cases nothing..

Anyone with the money can go to a shop and spend shed-loads, that's the easy peasy way - to be given something created with thought, time, effort and love says so much more about you!!

*I'd love to be given something like that!* :o

this is the important thing, you've put lots of thought love and time into this gift, if she makes a fuss then more fool her. and ringing each week to ask what you've got her? is she 5? (no offence to any 5 year olds)

not that there is ANYTHING wrong with getting things in the sales but why does she give you your present in feb? I'd buy things in the sales and then save until christmas (like the £10 slow cookers i saw in argos half price)
  • Your present to the outlaws was made with much love and thought. You can't put a price on that. If she doesn't like it you could tell her you will have it back, to give to elderly people that you know who would appreciate it. Warn her in advance that you are rethinking your gift policy. Presents for the very immediate family only or the challenge of finding presents for a set budget.

I say skip the satsuma, just give her a lump of coal!!

I think I have a relative like this in my midst. But hey-ho. You get what you're given and if you don't like it - tough.

  • I think that everyone has someone like this in their family or friends...

Personally I would love to be given a hamper full of useful things, so many things we get each year are expensive and rarely used. I feel the same about stuff I make to give people, therefore I only make things now for those who appreciate how much time and effort I have spent on them!

I think putting something like a hamper together is great. It takes more thought than a normal Christmas pressie. I did this for my in laws for quite a few years before they passed away and very grateful they were too. Wasn't sure about it the first time I did it but the following year when I asked them what they would like for Christmas they said "if it's not too much trouble would you do another hamper?" :j and its what they asked for every year after that. MIL didn't have to do that "awful Christmas food shop."

My only concern is that your in-laws may already be stocking up on their usual Christmas goodies, so it may be worth letting them know what you are planning, otherwise, I can hear it now "we've already bought that." :rotfl:
  • B**** cheek! If she doesent like it, tough! Its a PRESENT! You dont demand presents & if she cant see the love in it I go with giving her a £10 gift voucher next year - that'll shut her up! Also re 5yr old comment why dont you say if she asks again she wont get anything!! I know...you cant but wouldnt it be great to see her face eh!

Thanks all for your replys, feel a little better about it now, like you said if she doesnt like it then tough!!

My Dh was worrying about it to but he thinks the hamper looks great!!

Our main worry was they can be very spiteful, last year they told me sil only spent x amount of pounds on us so thats all we will be spending on her next year!! So i know they moan and talk about what we all get them.
They are taking one of the kids to malta next may and the other 2 the following may (thats a long story in itself!!), just worried the will not take the kids on hoilday. But hey if they dont then we will!!

Last year I went to a lot of effort to make homemade mince pies - I made the pastry from scratch and even bought 2 different types of mincemeat to take round to my MIL. No-one would even eat them because I had used half butter and half low fat spread, and they thought it would be bad for them. The mincepies were really nice, and I was really upset because she decided to pass round shop bought ones too.
    This year I won't bother!
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.
