I remember those pictures being fired around a while back, general consensus seemed to be that the stock of cars there was not actually from the scrappage scheme

It was just the daily mail being... well, the daily mail :D

The general consensus was wrong then.

What do you think they are?

Right quantity, age of vehicle, lots of security. Some with visible damage. Plus people have managed to gain access.

I think for the majority of folk driving a motorcycle on a regular commute at this time of year is not only barmy...........but certfiable!

Having just ridden home from work in a snowstorm I can only agree!!
I've been commuting on a bike for nearly six years and until last January never had a moment's bother - this winter has already been a nightmare and I live in Blackpool, which hasn't exactly been deluged with snow.

To the OP: if it's a new job, don't take out long-term finance on an expensive car, the job might not work out. Get settled in first.

Oh, and somebody had to say it - a journey under 10 miles can be done most of the time by cycling - I manage on average 3 times a week and I'm not superfit. For ten miles cycling takes me about 45 minutes; 30 - 45 minutes in a car; 80 minutes on the bus!

But if you want a nice car and can afford it - why not?

  • Good suggestions but a motorcycle is not going to happen!

However I do have a pushbike and will cycle some of the time - when the weather gets better - not sure I could face that distance in the icy cold at the moment.

Bangernomics sounds interesting so will check my local area but doubt I have the knowledge to pick out a decent one.

Thanks for all the car suggestions, will go and have a look on the garage forecourts tomorrow to check some out.
hadn't considered rover but there is an 03 rover 25 2.0 turbo diesel with 92k miles for 1495 from a dealer on autotrader so affordable.

You're right to be cautious, and need someone who does know what to look for. And someone who will repair the minor problems for you for just the cost of the parts.

you could get something like a MK2 renult laguna, you can get a desiel top spec one for around £2k with around 80k miles,

they are great cars too, hight equipment levels etc etc.
since they are only about 6 years old, you can run them into the ground for another few years, and be hardly out of pocket!

they easily get a good 55 mpg, and at 70mph they are refinded and quite

i run a ford focus mk1, and its also very reliable, but they dont have cruise control.
  • its recycling at its best
the scrappage scheme was a total scam and is costing the goverment 100's of thousands in storage costs
heres one example a army air filed that they rent to store all the cars that were traded in. none of these can be used again some are pretty good cars. the scrappy thats taking them can only take 16 cars a day this is where the governments money is going paying to rent the space for these cars

Almost all of the 400,000 vehicles sold through the scheme are still roadworthy and many could be driven for another five years, according to experts.
However, the vast collection --which includes a fine range of BMWs, Volvos and Peugeots - must be destroyed under the scheme's rules.

this is only one airfield the goverment has paid around 28 million for this scheme
