  • its recycling at its best
the scrappage scheme was a total scam and is costing the goverment 100's of thousands in storage costs
heres one example a army air filed that they rent to store all the cars that were traded in. none of these can be used again some are pretty good cars. the scrappy thats taking them can only take 16 cars a day this is where the governments money is going paying to rent the space for these cars

Almost all of the 400,000 vehicles sold through the scheme are still roadworthy and many could be driven for another five years, according to experts.
However, the vast collection --which includes a fine range of BMWs, Volvos and Peugeots - must be destroyed under the scheme's rules.

this is only one airfield the goverment has paid around 28 million for this scheme

  • What a waste:(
  • i just find it bad that there are lots of familys, single mums and dads etc that drive their kids round in dangerous car becuase they cant afford a newer safer one thats where the scheme should have been targeted. get those nicer cars then allow people who are struggling to swap there cars for the traded in ones.

the fact is the cars they were trying to get off the road wouldnt have been traded in as these people couldnt afford a new car even with the scrappage scheme. i wouldnt have done it as i love my old cars

note the Audi A6 in the top right

    Couldn't agree more

Then again what does this government ever get right, they could at least auction off decent motors.

From that pic there seems to be some good motors there

Do you know what the running costs of an M3 actually are? And you think it's going to like being used as a daily runabout? Know any M3 owners lol!

Much as I agree with the buying an older, thirstier thing, I'm not sure they are cheap enough to outweigh the insurance cost, servicing costs, 18mpg and the potential issues (VANOS anyone?)

Yup, our friend has one and commutes 50 miles a day in it. Then on the weekend he puts the roof down and has a fantastic weekend car.

Insurance - I was quoted £300 more than our Ka.

Yes fuel and servicing is going to be more expensive than a Nissan but sell it in a years time and lose very little money.

The only car in that bottom picture that seems to be actually worth scrapping is that barried saxo with the badly done tints.

That said I know one elderly couple who did well on the scrappage scheme. Me and a mate stopped to help them as they were broken down on the M4 in a 20 year old Toyota Corolla. Turned out the head gasket had gone en route to trading the car in under scrappage, so we towed them to just around the corner from the dealership they were buying from, filled the car up with water and told them to drive it in and keep quiet.
  • i thought cars traded in by the scrappage scheme needed to be ten years old? A lot of those cars in the pictures are younger than that?

Are you sure they are related to the scrappage scheme?

  • which ones are less than 10 years old i thought it was pre 2001
