phone line help needed

Hi, i have recently moved into a new house (1st home) and the phone line has been disconnected, the previous owner had virgin but i think there is still a bt line there as well, we dont want digital tv for now so im trying to get the cheapest deal possible, following martins news letter this week i've looked at primus for line rental but need to have the line re-connected first, just wondered if anyone knew who would be best to get this done by? primus themselves, bt or talktalk?

thanks for any help given. :)

  • I'm not sure whether Primus can connect lines. If so, and I'm sure somebody else will confirm/deny then that's probably the best option.

If you go with most other companies line connection will be between 0.00 and 150.00 and will normally then tie you to that company's line rental for 12 or 18 months, so you won't be able to use Primus for line rental anyway. Example: Virgin National is about 39.00 I believe with 12 month line rental contract.

Some exceptions which only have a one month contract - meaning you can get connected then migrate to Primus - are Post Office and IDNet, line connection in region of 125.00

If the property is cabled, cable installation is normally circa 30.00 to include the phone line, but I'm not sure whether Virgin will just install phone line only in a cabled area.
  • thanks for your response, the previous owners were with virgin so that means we're cabled as well right? not sure which is better to go with. never knew trying to sort out phone and internet could be so complicated! lol

If you are cabled for VM,you can only have VM services.A VM phoneline is incompatable with DSL Broadband.ie BT/Primus/O2/TT ect...
  • i think there is still a bt line that could be connected though, the previous people had virgin disconnected so couldnt i go with either or have i got it all wrong?! lol

If the is a BT line in the home you can go with either, but you may need to pay the guts of £100 odd for BT to activate their line or install it.
VM's may only cost a reconnection fee of something like £30...

You can use either, but you'll have to pay a reconnection charge either way. Using VM will tie you to VM though, as spike already advised.

  • ah ok, so connecting to bt will cost more but maybe cheaper deals in long run? have anyone has a good experience with this primus company as i've only read complaints so far!

    BT-cheaper deals? I doubt it.
The point we are trying to make is that going to VM cable will give you no options in the future at all-you'll be tied to VM until such time as you re-connect the ADSL line.

  • i ment cheaper deals from companys using a bt line, not necessarliy bt themselves, as i understand most companys require you to have a bt line. is this correst? i may sound more clueless now but what does ADSL actually stand for?

You can have a BT line without it being installed by BT. For example, the PO will arrange an install and charge you line rental, but it remains a BT line on the BT network.
    Asynchrous Digital Subscriber Line.
