I get about 320 miles from my 50 litre tank on my 51 plate 206 petrol. Mix of A roads and town.

Is it broken? My wife gets that in her 2L V6 200BHP Mitsubishi FTO.

No, why would it be broken? It's not the crappy 1 litre model if that is what you are thinking.

My RenaultSport clio 197 used to be horrendous on petrol too

On the Motorway sticking to 70mph and in 6th, the most i ever got was 39.6mpg

Around town it averaged a pitfull 24mpg.

Glad i've got a diesel now. In town i'm getting 40-45mpg and on the motorway i've seen 67.8mpg

Put simply the clio cost me £200 a month to fuel and the diesel is costing me £80 a month.

Back to the OPs question. I had an M reg 405 TD estate which I think would have had the same engine as the OP but in a slightly larger car.

Fuel consumption varied from 45 mpg (wife driving it three miles to work and back) to 60 mpg (me driving it on long journeys at 60 mph). If the OP is getting under 40 mpg then there is probably something wrong with either the car or their driving style.

i agree this is going to get booted to DT if we chat about our own MPG!! back on topic, i suppose the the question we need to know is:

. when was it last service and how often and did the services include fuel filter changes? glow plugs? how worn is the engine is it turbo version or direct diesel etc.

. do you drive often with a load of people in the car? school runs etc.
are you leaving the aircon on (for climate control vehicles)
the 306 wasnt at all bad on MPG from my recollection.

most people just jump in and drive without warming the engine first i.e just letting it idle to warm engine up so your not driving about with the revs higher as the car warms up useing more fuel, and stopping turning it off before its had chance to warm up then doing it all over again.

But that means that the engine is running and you are going nowhere, which is obviously wasting fuel, better to drive off immediately.

No need for " higher revs " before the engine warms up.

My husband has an S reg 306 1.9 turbo Diesel he gets 400-500 miles from a tank (which costs around £60 at current prices) depending on conditions. His used to always do 500 but seems to be going a little lower now, but yours should do a bit more than 130 for £20 worth (or did you mean 20 litres?). Maybe change your fuel filter? Or oil?
