i am so not techie but get by. i have avg, adaware, zone alarm and microsoft protection. the last month though i have been getting annoying e-mails that look like they are selling shares or some such. coloured writing and first names as sender, always different. i had a problem with viagra shots a while back (who hasnt?) but they stopped pretty quickly as i deleted without opening them, but these are getting worse.

question is, how do i stop them? right clicked some in the delete bin for address, all different. tried 'help' but not very savvie as i said earlier.

help would be much appreciated

  • I am having the same problem and like you its getting worse ! I have found that if you are using Outlook express click on the message tab on the top tool bar and there is an option to 'block sender'. Unfortunately you have to click on the email to do this but surely at some stage it must stop them !!!! I wonder where they get our e mail addresses from as like you I have plenty of virus protection ! Hope this is of some use.

I looked for a good spam filter for ages. After years of never receiving any spam, I'm suddenly being plagued by it.

I can definately recommend Spambayes. If you use Outlook as your email client it's really easy to set up, otherwise you'll need to read the details on their website: http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/

your email address could have picked up from a mailing list, a friend with a virus ... so many ways spammers could have got hold of your email address. even pure guess work.
spam seems to be a fact of life these days..

Spam senders seem to be getting more sophisticated. I keep getting offers to buy american shares but they contain lots of ordinary words to fool the detectors and come from a different address each time so blocking is ineffective. And they avoid my anti-spam software because they must look like ordinary emails.

Can anything be done to prevent these without losing genuine emails at the same time?

I go into the properties of the email, copy the info, and forward the email to abuse@orange.co.uk as I am with orange broadband. It generally stops within a couple of days.
