I want to treat myself, as this is my first Xmas in 2 years (last Xmas I was in intensive care following a motorbike accident), and I was thinking of an ipod, but there are so many different models around, and I am no expert. Can someone suggest and direct, please!

Do you want it for music only or would you also like to watch video as well? There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.0 -
Also depends on your budget
If you want it purely for music, then something like a nano would be ideal
However, if you want to start using all the apps you will have heard so much about an ipod touch would be the answer
With something like the free vlc app, this now makes the touch a video player (Very easy to watch as the screen is superb). Games, utilities etc etc
This would then depend on your budget. You get the best you can afford. Just get a 32gb 3rd generation or better. These have higher grade processors in them and some apps need this. Register it on your PC, connect to wifi and enjoyThere are 10 kinds of people that understand binary

If you have wifi at home I would totally recommend the iPod Touch.
I use mine to access all the websites I visit on my laptop including here.
Also to check mail etc.
very handy when you don't want to keep a laptop or pc on all the time and you can also access in certain places when out and about.
Oh, and you can listen to all your tunes and if you really wanted videos as well! Then there are a multitude of apps.IAAR/IAAMM/MFTMFAQ/IOA6BH0 -
Depends how much storage you want. Do you know how many songs you want to keep on there?0

Bit of a silly question but can someone explain what are apps and what do they do? Do you need wifi access for these?0 -
Not a silly question at all

You can download apps through iTunes (many are free) or if you have wifi access at home/out and about you can download them straight to the iPod Touch via the App Store that is installed as standard (mobile version of the iTunes App store, kinda)
You can get many Apps for instance Classic books, eBay, eBay selling, games, Home Routines, you can buy book downloads (the latest books but at paperback prices)
As far as I know the iPod Touch is the only one which does all this. It's basically like an iPhone without the phone, however you can get a skype app I believe, and I notice the latest models have 'facetime' which seems to utilize a built in phone. I remember when I got my 2nd generation iTouch reading that you can get a microphone headset and use apps to make calls, but this is only good if you are in reception of a wifi signal.
Edited to add:
Apps are just little handy gadgets, games and tools you can use. It costs nothing to look on the iTunes store, to see if it would be worth your while. Look for the Apps heading and browse there!IAAR/IAAMM/MFTMFAQ/IOA6BH0 -
I *think* the new touchscreen nano has some kind of app integration, but because of the small screen, it is really rudimentary, and if you want it for apps definitely go for one of the ipod touch ones.0

The ipod touch sounds really tempting, but at a cost. If you can access the internet via wifi, then it could make the laptop redundant, whilst on the move, connecting to the millions of wifi hot-spots. Maybe my treat will have to wait for me to get back to work and earn some money. I have not worked since my accident. But one to save up for.0 -

can I please ask why the 3rd gen is better? do you mean better than the 4th gen?
I was thinking of getting the 4th gen 8gb, mostly for the apps/browsing . I will use the music but wont be putting hundreds of cds on it.
Would it be better to get the older one with more storage?:money: Martin Lewis Rocks!:money:0
