Contract or not?

My phone has just died on me so looking into getting a new one. Not after anything too complicated as only really use it for texting but would like to check facebook every now and again using phone.

My previous phone is on pay as you go with 02, i top up approx 10 pound every 2 months and this covers my usage well (a few texts and occasional call).
I like the look of the nokia c3 and seems to have the features i am after and simple to use. I could get it on contract with o2 50 mins and unlimited txts for 10 pound a month for 24 months or buy the phone (70 pound) and get 02 simplicity sim with unlimited texts for a fiver a month.

Don't like the idea of signing a 2 year contract but can't really afford to buy phone outright either. What do you think would be best bet for low usage mobile user? Does going on facebook cost much?

Alternative option to avoid the long contract -

Buy the Nokia C3 from Littlewoods, interest free over 52 weeks.
The £89.00 price would come with a 10% discount off first order.
The £80.10 order would earn £6.40 quidco commission.
    (use quidco.com/littlewoods )
Therefore, the £74.70 price would be closer to the normal price from regular shops, but with interest free repayments. You'd get a 4-weekly statement from littlewoods, wanting about £6 each time.

You can use the o2 simplicity tariff on PAYG to avoid contracts altogether if you like - http://shop.o2.co.uk/tariffs/Pay_and_Go
