Settle to carlisle railway journey

Hi,

I wonder if anyone could help me. I want to book a family ticket for the Settle to Carlisle Railway journey on a steam train. I have searched the web and the cheapest I could find is £200. Can this be done any cheaper?

It is for anytime next year.

Thank you;)

I doubt it. Steam trains are extremely exoensive to run

A normal train might be the most cost effective solution

I think that's probably the cheapest to be honest. Pop in and say hello though :) I'll be in the shop when you get to Carlisle ... lol

There are quite a few tour operators but from what I can see they all use West Coast Railways both for the locomotive & carriages. You are right about the cost its not cheap, but if you incorporate into with a longer break then it is may be more reasonable. I used to work in a warehouse next to the railway line at Saltaire and would see a nice train regularly in Spring & Summer. If you really want to just see the sights and have a lower cost then an alternative would to catch any scheduled Northern Rail service from Leeds to Carlisle, get of at Keighley and visit here http://www.kwvr.co.uk/
Then get back on the next train to Carlisle.

Most decent steam trips start at about £80 per adult, so £200 is about right.

A normal train gets you the view, but the trains they use are truly diabolical for longer trips. A couple of years ago there was a sceduled trip every day using a diesel loco and proper carriages, but this no longer runs, so you are stuck with a Northern Rail service on a two or three carriage noisebox diesel.
  • As had been said they are quite pricey things to run so tickets reflect this..

    check here for other tours.

  • Thank you for all your responses. I might try and talk him into a 'normal' train!

    I've just found: http://www.statesmanrail.com/fellsman.html

Could be useful - there is a bit of change out of £200. Not much though
  • For any holders of the ENCP, just a reminder that the special winter offer of £8 return Leeds-Settle-Carlisle operates till 12th March. (Unfortunately only using Northern Rail but you do get the same views as you would on a steam train!) The same offer also applies on the Leeds-Lancaster-Morecambe route.

  • Thanks TravellingAbuela & dzug1.

Sorry to be thick but what is ENCP? This would be a far better price if I could get it.

TravellingAbuela - that is the website he originally saw it from and he is still talking about a steam train!!! - doh - so it might have to be that one that i use. Thanks again to you all
