The budget for my wedding is less than £3k, by all means we could afford a £5k ring and £15k wedding, but figured we would rather buy a house with that money to make the rest of our lives together easier.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

Am I the only person on here thinking the OP should go for it?? If that's what you want then get in there!
This board is understanably populated with thrifty types, many who have got themselves in trouble with their debt. The OP hasn't intimated that his debt was a problem.. he chose to pay it off to get himself in a position to buy the ring NOT to get out of debt.
If you have most of the money in place by 2011 why not get a BA AMEX Premium credit card - buy the ring with that. You'll get 6000 bonus miles + 7,500 miles for the ring purchase and you'll already halfway from getting two flights for the price of one (by spending £10k in a year on the card) - then the honeymoon flights are almost paid for too.
The advice on here is sensible.. and do listen to it, but if you're heart and budget say "go for it" then do so!0 -

I can’t speak for everyone but the advice was not to get into debt in the first stage of very lovely period in your life. I will also say get her even £10k ring but not on credit, with £26k salary and having to borrow £5k for the first step, it will put strain on them. There is famous Egyptian saying on this “Stretch your legs as far as your quilt goes”
There is wedding, other things in life that needs money too, surely you can enjoy your life and have fun too instead of die saving but what people saying, it is a start for more debts.
If someone can’t or don’t think can save when they are debt free, how easier will it be with debt added on???
I am more careful with money now but I can also splash on nice holidays, or nice things knowing I can afford it, and not have to worry about the bill.0 -
Sorry to bring up this old, old post but I think an old adage is in need of posting here.
If she's worth it, she won't care what it costs. Find something that really signifies what you are as a couple. It'll be a talking piece for you both if you got a ring with say, a different gem, or a symbol that represents something to you.
Put the shoe on the other foot (and downgrade it!) and ask yourself - what would you rather have your wife buy you, a £500 ring, or a downpayment on a car?Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”0 -
Hi my suggestion is why not just save? And in about 6months the next lot of sales will come around. My friend saved for about 8months last year,to buy a ring(to propose)-he had about £2k, he went to the Harrods sale(of all places!) and picked up a ring worth twice that, for half price. His now, wife loves it and it didn't require debt. Most high end stores discount really big amounts off in sale so its def worth a look. Good Luck0

I can actually recommend them as a company as I and a friend have used them.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

Just to let you know that you can actually get 14% cashback via Quidco for rings at Ernest Jones which could mean you borrowing (and spending a fair bit less).0

here's what to do...
save £1,000 between now and the summer. Spend £300 on a return flight to Abu Dhabi with Etihad. Buy a £700 ring and fly back.
It will be worth about £2,000+ over here.
Do it
I got our engagement and wedding rings over there, but I had the benefit of a relative to stay with!0 -
Sounds a decent level of cashback, just remember don't let the tale wag the dog, 14% sounds great but if you can get the same item 15% cheaper elsewhere with no cashback then buy there.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

I didn't go over but I did take advantage of such pricing and did spend less than the example and got it quoted as worth more than the example.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017
