Would she have said yes to a cheaper ring? Yes
Could she have told the difference between her ring and a cheaper ring? Probably not
Am I still glad I spent the extra? Yes
And her feelings on your joint financial future be damned, eh? Given that you say she would have said yes anyway and wouldn't have known if the ring had been cheaper, all I see here is ego.

Not strictly true, diamonds and other precious stones and metals have various and important uses in industry :rotfl:
Thanks, pedant.
My point was that a £5k diamond ring does nothing better than a £100 copy, other than look shiny. I can't understand it myself, but each to their own!0 -

sometimes people may want something like that to pass down their family onto children/grandchildren etc. could end up worth more than you paid for it possibly? but yeah its more about showing love than showing wallet size.0 -

As my previous reply got deleted here it is again.
The purchase didn't affect our joint financial future as it was still affordable and I needed no credit to purchase it. I was happy to spend a bit more than I intended for the ring.
She loves the ring and that makes me happy, I don't regret a single penny I spent on it.
Why you felt the need to post what you did is beyond me. You might like everything thing to be as cheap as possible but some of us are happy to spend a little bit extra for things like this.
I would suggest that all you see is ego because that is what you wanted to see. There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.0 -

Then I would suggest that this isn't relevant to the thread (which is the context within which I was writing).0 -

Who are you to decide what is relevant when you're not the OP?
My post was a reply to that there was no need to spend that sort of money. I agreed that there was no need but sometimes people like to spend a little bit extra, especially on something important to them.
I'm quite sure the OP is capable of ignoring anything he doesn't consider relevant. There's no sense crying over every mistake.
