O2 Broadband or not?

Hi, I'm thinking of going with O2 Broadband - basically because their package seems to be a great deal: £19.50/month incl. line rental for broadband (20 mb unlimited) and phone (O2 customers only).

However, some anxieties:

1) O2 said I might be without internet for a few days - is there any way to avoid this? Surely, it's a case of being with Sky (current ISP) until the engineer turns me off Sky to O2 at the exchange whereupon I should immediately be an O2 customer, right?

2) Will I or won't I get the same speeds as my old package? Old stated Sky speed was 20mb/s (when tested it was 10mb/s DOWN, 0.8mb UP) I don't know if I'm local loop unbundled. I'm just over 1 mile from the exchange.

3) £45 connection fee to O2. If I'm unhappy with the service I can terminate within 30 days, but the £45 won't be refundable, not to mention the fact that I'd probably have to pay again to be reconnected to another ISP.

Thanks.

Couple of hours to a couple of days .
The engineer does not sit in the exchange waiting to switch customers .

You will only know that for sure when you are online and after any required line training time .

If you are getting 10Mbps then you are on Sky LLU broadband.
If you also pay Sky for line rental/calls then you will probably have to transfer back to BT before you can change ISP, as O2 will require you to have a BT line before they can connect you.

BTW Your Sky broadband would be costing you £7.50/month if you also have Sky Talk and your line rental would be around £11, i.e £18.50 /month so shirley your O2 deal would cost you more?

I told O2 I was with Sky. They didn't say I'd have to change to BT - they just said it'd be £45 and whatever time it took.

Penrhyn, the deal you're talking about requires a TV sub (+2.50 without). Still, I may be better off going with that than the hassle of changing over to O2 - £10 + line rental £11.25. Thanks.

Fair enough, I had assumed that you probably had a Sky TV sub, as its only recently that they have made broadband available to non TV subscribers.

I'm of the 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' school of thought too!
