I found this a total waste of money so i want be renewing but thanks anyway

I use the train to travel long- distance 3 or 4 times a year, and for local journeys about once a month or so. I think it's fantastic value (even at the new price). The fact my companion is entitled to the same discount is a great bonus for me. My current railcard doesn't run out till 2013 though :-)

I was soo glad I bought mine when I did - wasn't sure it was worth it, then my dad was taken into hospital and I got my money's worth! then renewed for 3 years. as I can't drive atm I foresee it continuing to pay for itself.

  • Mind doesnt run out till summer, I dont think the increase is that big anyways. I saved mega amount of money using my railcard so its so worth it!

Thanks for the info OP, I didn't know that. My three year one runs out in April, so I'd have to try to figure out if it's worth renewing early and losing four months. I use it a lot, and it's a huge saving, often paying for itself on the first trip.

Given the small size of the price increase, I don't think it's worth renewing that early. Every penny counts for me at the moment so I'm going to get in there early as I buy the three year one anyway (far less hassle than annual renewal). If mine wasn't due until April, I don't think the maths work in your favour. We're talking about a £2 a year increase and you are considering losing four months which is far more than £2. Stick with a normal renewal.

Thanks for the advice Stardust, I'll wait until April to renew. I also get the three year one because it's cheaper over that time than buying one each year.

I agree. I bought a 3 year one in June 2009, expecting to be at uni for those 3 years. Due to circumstances out of my control, I completed first year and left. :(

I tend to travel alone for the few journeys i make so it's probably not worth me getting one, i've had a yp railcard the last 5 years.

The Disabled Persons Railcard is (currently) £8 cheaper than the YP one. So if you qualify, it's worth getting even though you normally travel alone.

I think there are restrictions on when you can travel with the YP, too.
