From Sunday 2 January 2011 the price of a one year Railcard will be £20 and a three year Railcard will be £54.

This is the first price increase for the Disabled Persons Railcard in four years.

Given the state of the post at present, plus the bank holidays over Christmas, I would send it now. If you give them a call and ask them to renew it as late as possible they should do, they have always been very helpful when I have called.
    Gone ... or have I?

Presumably you don't travel by train - to anyone who does travel by train especially with someone else it's a great saving.

To the OP - as dmg24 said, call them now and see if you can buy early. They'll know when your card is due for renewal so should be able to issue you a card which starts the day after your current one ends.
  • I'll renew online so the post thing won't be an issue. Being deaf hoh, telephones aren't my favourite form of communication. ;-)

I definitely wouldn't call the railcard a waste of money. The savings are great and as you can also buy a ticket for a travelling companion at a third off too, I call that a real bargain.
  • It is a real bargain. You can save the cost of getting the card rather quickly as well. My partner goes everywhere with me and we save quite a bit - although I don't have one of these cards as most of the time I'm in my wheelchair on the train (I'm a part time wheelcahir user) and you and another get 1/3 off anyway. If someone is a full time wheelchair user it would be a waste to be honest so it might not just be due to lack of travel. I'm thinking about getting one though as I'm not always in my wheelchair when we go on the train.

But did you bother to tell them when you bought it that you had three children?

I find my DP Railcard a godsend, it has paid for itself several times over in the saving I make when visiting my family by train, as train is a much more convenient way to get to my dad's place than coach.

I suppose that is another difference people who don't have children, like my partner and I, would find it saves money. We could save £18/year quite easily with the trips we make with me not in the wheelchair. Infact the usual trip that we make without the wheelchair would only take 3 trips worth to break even :rotfl: . This is a trip that we have to make 6-12 times a year. Yep, I've made up my mind, I have to get one.

As Trialia has said if you had told them you had children they would have advised on the other rail card. Although saying that to use the family rail card you have to have your children with you every time you use it I believe. Fine if you do but some people might not take their children everywhere they go so will still save by getting the disabled rail card also?

I have one and think it's brilliant. You can also use it to get a discount on your oyster card.
