internet problems

Our ISP is Primus and they have spent over two weeks fobbing me off with "we cant send out an engineer until you do a speed test", but we cant do a speed test, they have also said that if there are wiring problems we will be charged for the engineers visit, so I thought if any of you clever people had any ideas as I am not very good with computers0

Thanks we are trying but they say that as we upgraded we are now tied in to a twelve month contract, but they are not sorting the problem even though we are calling them daily, so its not an obvious problem then?0

Why cant you do a speed test?
There are any number of sites you can do one from e.g.
http://www.speedtest.net/
I've already pointed out that router statistics are required to identify any potential line problems.
However your ISP should be able to read these from your router even if you can't.
BTW Has your ISP told you to try connecting to the test socket on your master telephone point, under the faceplate?
Do a speed test as above.
Connect your router to the BT Master test socket, and repeat the speed test and report back the two sets of readings.
That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Sorry but posting "my internet is slow" then failing to provide any other information at all makes that question just as impossible to answer as providing any sort of solution....so its not an obvious problem then?
You have been asked several times for your router stats and without them there is nothing anybody can do other than guess. You haven't even given the make and model number of your router so that somebody else can lookup how to get the stats for you.0 -
i have tried to google my router speed stats but the connection fails after so long , we have a belkin router F5D7634 and i managed 2 pages of google before the connection failed, it has taken several attempts to post even on this site.
Primus have had us connect the line directly as illustrated but that didnt help the problem.
I do appreciate all the posters that have tried to help,
I may have to rely on my Isp to sort it but I dont feel that they are trying very hard, we cant connect to any site with enough connection to do a speed test as the sites time out before the test is complete, as it has been taking over an hour to test, and this has been the same since they upgraded the line
Thanks sarah0 -
All the Belkin routers that are listed on http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php seem to have very similar urls for their stats pages.
There is a whole page showing various possibilities - http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/belkin_commands.htm0 -
Basically if you're plugged into your test socket inside the master faceplate that eliminates any problem with your inhouse wiring.
If you are using the same router and cable and filter as before that eliminates them being at fault (if something changed here SAY SO) try swapping with the old one in each case
your local BT cabling is unlikely to have changed.
As you are having issues on your wired PC that eliminates wireless beign the problem.
If in 'upgrading' you switched from BT to a LLU product or vice versa its 'possible'they screwed somethign up at the exchange but not hugely likely.
most likely is if you have been switched somethign to do with your 'profile' at the exchange could be screwed and waiting a week or so would let it settle down.
You can also screw your profile if you ever unplug the phone cable without shutting down the router first (=slow internet for another week or so while it resets itself)
getting your line stats will help determine any physical problem with your line if one exists
Finally it could just be that your provider has a dodgy LLU network in your area and all the other ones are better, in which case only solution is to fix.... diid you research the speeds each provider is reported to deliver in your area prior to signing up?
if ever you give hints as to what area roughly you are located in, what product you moved from and to with which provider people may be able to take a better stab at things.... but like your router model this info seems to all be 'secret' for now0
