Fresh bread on boxing day?

Hi Experts,

I have been given the onerous task of having 18 people over on Boxing Day and I have decided that I will make a buffet - a couple of roasted joints and rolls as well as "picky bits".

Does anyone know if any of the supermarkets will be open, and if so would they have fresh bakery bread?

I doubt it very much - most shops are usually still closed on Boxing Day although you may find a convenience store open - but I don't know how fresh the bread would be.

I normally just buy a few loaves before Christmas and stick them in the freezer, they are still nice and fresh when they defrost!

Thanks cagsd - do you mean the fresh bakery bread? Baguettes etc? That's definitely an option thanks!

My local Asda is open on boxing day. Can't help with the bakery though, sorry.
  • It's so easy and cheap to make your own bread! And much, MUCH tastier and more impressive than supermarket bread. Bread recipes
  • Get some of those part-baked baguettes as a back up

My local Tesco is open but as others have said, if you are not baking your own, then some of the part baked things are good or just freeze some bread till you need it.

I expect that if the stores are open the bakeries will be running. I suggest giving your local store a ring and ask.

  • Thanks everyone! I am very old school in my cooking but bread is one thing I CANNOT get to grips with! It always ends up crunchy on the outside and a big, doughy mess on the inside - just vile!

I need to buy a breadmaker but I just havent ever got round to it!

There are some part baked ciabattas available as well.
  • Another vote for the part baked bread which is sealed in packs until you need them. All of the supermarkets do them now, Aldi have very nice rolls and ciabatta.
