  • I dont like driving in winding and twisty road at night so would prefer the M1.

Yes the weather is bad from wed night onwards, just hope by sunday it would be cleared. I already paid for 2 nights stay at travelodge for £42.50 so dont want to not even making the trip due to bad weather!

Those that ( I was one ) who suggested the A1 , drive it regularly. It was a winding and twisty road
twenty plus years ago , but now mostly dual carriage way , A1 (M) meaning three lanes and some even 5 lanes wide ( near Perterbourgh). Yes It drops to a single lane for a short time around Sandy , but as you are planning a 60 mph , stick with the A1 , much more interesting than a standard boring M1

I had a mate that used to drive to Sunderland every week, he lived there and worked down here so stayed in digs.

He used to go the A1 as he found the M1 to be more congested. He did his return journeys every week for 6 years, he would only get problems on the way down when the M11 could give problems, he also needed to get to East London so that may have helped in his chioce of A1.

But from SE London, I would head for the A2 up o the M25 and round to M11, then up to the A1 from there, too many miles involved in getting to the M1 from where you are.
  • Ok A1 seems to get the votes here. I'm near Lewisham so would be heading to the blackwall tunnel, A12, M11, A1. The only thing I dont like about the M1 route would be going through central london, taking a while to get to north london (edgware) before finally hitting the highway, also as some has suggested roadworks etc. The fact that you guys are saying the A1 (M) are 3 lanes and dont now have twisty roads will make me favour this route more.

A1 every time (I live 100 metres away from it NG24 3FA). The trip to Leeds from here is a breeze! Plus the A1 is far less congested, on a Sunday will have far fewer trucks, better quality of drivers and you can pull off (oooh err) for a wee if you need it! The A1 has a much better clientel!!

I've never heard of London to Leeds using A1 instead of M1. Is it really MSE? I assuming only if distance is less but don't you have to stop more often (roundabouts etc)?

Depends whereabouts in "London" you are and whereabouts in Leeds you want to be.

Once you get past Bedfordshire, there's no roundabouts on the A1 until past Newcastle as they removed them all over the last few years. Speeds up the journey considerably.

Given the choice of the two, I'd take the A1 every time due to the lower amount of traffic hold ups.
