I will be setting off this sunday around 4-6pm, just like to know which route would be best in terms of road quality and timewise to get there. It is sunday so I'm assuming it will be pretty much traffic free? And it true MSE style I will be driving around the 60mph range for good fuel economy.

Think I would check the traffic reports , late as possible. Then decide.
If the roads are clear .... fat chance. Would go via the A10 -
looking at google traffic for that time on a sunday they both look fine, but one crash on either one can cause massive tailbacks, best check the traffic just before you set off to see if there are any problems on either one.
only other difference is the M1 has 3 lanes and the A1 has 2 for the majority of the way0 -
The M1 is often congested late Sunday afteroon both North and South from about J6A to 14 and there are roadworks from 11 to 14. The A1 on the other hand is clearer but also has some roundabouts to slow you down. Agree to check traffic and if no major accidents on either I would choose the A1.0

M11, A14, A1 all the way.
Getting across to the M1 will be bad and the roadworks on the M1 will slow traffic.0 -
A1 every time. Giraffe69 is out of date. The A1 used to have roundabouts in South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, but most have now been replaced with motorway slip roads. It does however still have a number of speed cameras - if you are doing 60 not a problem, until Gamston where there is a 50 limit.0

I've never heard of London to Leeds using A1 instead of M1. Is it really MSE? I assuming only if distance is less but don't you have to stop more often (roundabouts etc)?
I'm really interested (do East London to Wakefield on M1 in about 3.5 hours legally without stopping for breaks etc)0 -

The vast majority of the roundabouts have been removed in recent years and replaced with slip roads. There is one section with speed cameras as davey has said.
I prefer the A1 in the daytime and the M1 at night.The man without a signature.0 -

It that because there are more road lights on the M1 than the A1?
M11 and A1 route are 3 miles longer than M1 route for me according to google map. I will check traffic report on those routes before I set off. I do prefer 3 lanes motorway to 2 and more road lights as driving at night long distance is a strain.0 -
Partly to do with lights. I find some Northern parts of the A1 to be quite winding and twisty to drive at night. In a loaded car and with oncoming headlights and your speed has to drop. Whereas on the M1, traffic situations notwithstanding, it's easier to maintain a higher average speed. And there is always someone driving the whole length into London that you can tag onto for a high speed run...
I prefer the A1 because the road, scenery and choice of services are better than on the M1 during the day.The man without a signature.0 -
I think the main factor this weekend could be the weather. More snow is forecast so bear than in mind.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
