The OP is referring to a broadband contract, not a call and line rental package.

The BT site shows call plans with the auto renewing contracts (if you are getting some sort of deal, like evening and weekends for no extra charge , saving £2.99/month (so BT say), the payback is the auto renewable element of the contract, but the broadband deals only state 12,18 or 24 month contracts, nothing about auto renewing, so unless the OP got some sort of individual deal, then how can BT claim to have auto renewed the deal....if the OP never received any communication from BT with regard to renewing after the original 12 months (if the original deal was for 12 months) then they should easily be able to argue that they are not in contract and shouldnt be charged to leave, but if the original deal was for 18 or 24 months, or BT did call and ask 'do you want to renew ?' which can usually be responded to with ' maybe, what can you offer me ?' and some sort of discount negotiated, and if the OP accepted the offer to renew for a further period then the early termination fees would be valid,
