Could someone please give me the heads up on SDHC memory cards.
Need a 16gb to go into Panasonic camcorder. I have not got a clue between the different makes--Transcend, Scandisk and various makes that i know nothing about.
Many thanks people.

Also need a case for a Panasonic sdr-s50

So long as you stick to a known brand from a reliable source you'll be fine. Unbranded from HK sellers on eBay may be fine but they could also be slow low capacity fakes.

What you do need to check is the speed which these days should be quoted as the class which should equate to MB/s speed. Your camcorder should give some indication of what speed is required (also what the maximum size it can take is).
  • best to get one with the highest access read write time.

i have bought the cheap ones of ebay and they take forever to get photos off. I think for videos its worth spending a bit on a nice fast card but dont go to a high street retailer or you will pay a savage amount

I got the transcend 16GB (allegedly class 10) one for £18 2 months back, performs well (at least better than the lower rated speed classes) and was exceptionally good value compared to other brands you can pay £80+ for one slower and same size

EDIT: This one, with cashback via TCB -same card is on Amazon too

Why do you need a 16GB and not an 8GB or 4x4GB?

That camera has a data rate of upto 10Mbps, so you don't need a fast card from that point of view, may make a bit of difference transferring data into the PC, but more likely you'll be slowed up by the SD-USB adaptor you have (if you have one) anyway. Class 4 ought to be plenty fast, probably even Class 2. Class 10 would be a waste of money for that camera.

Also, as 16GB is like 3hrs of vid, which you're unlikely to shoot in one long take (unless you really like boring your audience to death!), how about 2x8Gb instead, approx 90 mins on each card, and you can swap them around quite easily (backing one up to PC whilst recording on the other), and may be a heap cheaper for you too.

Make sure you have an SDHC reader (not just SD, same size, same shape, different technology) in your computer, if not you can get USB ones, I got one for 8 quid from Maplin, works a treat.

or since the class 10 card I linked to is substantially cheaper than any Class 2 or Class 4 card of a similar size you can ignore this guys ramblings, save yourself a 'heap' and get a card thats both Fast and High capacity.

you can get 2x8GB cards if you like but that would be more expensive and i'm not sure what the advantage would be? pay extra for smaller cards so you can 'swap around'...... (and probably just lose one of them)
