Porting number to same network VIA free PAYG sims

Hi guys, I hope someone can shed some light on this...

I am currently on contract with 3 and got another contract deal with 3 with a good instant cashback deal. I have decided to cancel my first contract, but want to take the number over to the second contract.

Having worked in mobile phone sales over 10 years ago, I knew I couldn't do a straight forward number-porting. So I decided to get a free t-mobile sim & port to them first, and then to my second 3 contract.

I registered the T-mobile sim online & received the confirmation text etc. However, when I called T-mobile today to give them my PAC code, they insisted I had to top-up to make the t-mobile sim 'active'.

I can understand why they do this. But, this is not written anywhere on there website. In fact when I told them that on their "How to Keep Your Number" page ( http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/help-and-support/index?page=home&cat=NEW_CUSTOMER) it actually gives possible reasons that someone can't port a number...
What can stop me transferring my number to T-Mobile?

There could be two reasons:
1. Your number has been disconnected.
2. You have a minimum term contract with your current mobile operator and you have outstanding subscription charges.

... and sim topping-up/activation, wasn't given as a reason, they didn't care and said that their system won't allow porting unless PAYG sims had been topped-up/activated.

Before I buy another network sim, I just wanted to ask if anyone had done a similar thing with another network & if they had any problems?

THNX :o)

anyone else used a free PAYG sim to port a number?
  • You've probably already tried it, but have you tried phoning 3 to see if they'll do it for you? I know some networks will migrate your number from contract to PAYG then back onto contract for you so you don't need to do it yourself, they'll normally manage the full thing within 24 hours too.

Yes on my last contract I got a better deal as a new customer ! Added this new line to my account then ported the number I wanted to keep to a pay as you go sim and 2 days later back in. Simples ! Bit complex but worked all they see is a non network PAC coming in

Strange get an 02 sim worked last time for me !
  • Another idea would be a 30 day SIMO contract taken out online or over the phone, port the number straight away and then as soon as it goes cancel for free through the cooling off period and get a PAC.
