I gave up Sky and just have the free channels.
I try and not use the car in my lunchbreak but walk instead to save petrol.
I don't spend on credit cards unless it really is an emergency and not just a "want".
I gave up the gym which wasn't really used as much as it should have been.
Magazines and papers I read on-line.
I only get my hair cut and coloured every 16 weeks instead of every 6 weeks.
There's probably more to add to my list but it can't be a hardship doing without as I don't remember them.

Clothes- kind of. What I mean is that I plan what I need and then more often than not buy it secondhand on eBay. Bearing in mind that I used to be an "Oops, I forgot to wear earrings, I'll just pop into Accessorize at the station for another pair" and "Been invited to the pub after work, can't possibly go in my work clothes, I'll just pop to Topshop in my lunch hour" kind of girl then I'm doing absolutely brilliantly!

If I want something I really think about whether or not I need it and whether it fits into my monthly budget. If it does then I go for it- guilt-free. But it doesn't often fit that criteria.

Oh, and shoes. I have approx. 50 pairs of shoes so I really didn't need to keep adding to the collection. I tell you, when this debt's cleared I'm going to treat myself to the most gorgeous shoes :-)

For those of you who are having trouble giving up Coca Cola, check this site out, http://members.tripod.com/~Barefoot_Lass/cola.html. You might want to try a little bit harder after reading this!

  • Hi there all, what a great thread!

My daughter has given up coke! At it's worst she was drinking 2 x 2 litre bottles a day (£837 a year) The recycle wheelie bin would be overflowing on a fortnightly basis!

She's much happier now and her teeth are not a constant source of worry for me. And I have so noticed the saving already :j

I feel a bit like Alan Davies on QI when he gives the obvious answer and a big claxon goes off.........SMOKING.
Wife and I both quit on the same day almost 4 years ago, saveing at least £10k since then.
But for the life of me I can't find the money anywhere.

I also gave up diet coke.

I worked out that on my old lifestyle of about 4 cans a day and a 2 litre bottle at home EVERY DAY, I was spending nigh on a grand a year

Gave it up- if I drink it now, the headaches dont bear thinking about. So glad I gave that up!

And disappointing hot drinks & crap paninis from snazzy coffee bars. I can make nicer myself, thank you very much- at least I know my hands are clean when Ive made them too ;)

Lynz - Nevermind the other poster who needed to go the dentist! I'm so glad you have kicked that one....it dissolves your teeth let alone you wallet at that rate!!

  • 1. I cut up all my cards at the beginning of September.

    2. I throw the catalogues that come in through the letter box straight into
    the bin.

    3. I don't smoke or drink so no saving there, but I gave up buying chocolate.

    4. Stopped eating junk. Have lost 14 pounds in under four weeks!

    5. Stopped buying magazines. They are all full of a load of rubbish.

    6. Stopped my mobile phone insurance.
