Told boss I have been underpaid, now they say I owe them over 40 hours!

  • I have to be perfectly honest and I am not surprised they are getting wound up.
They have obligations but so do you and you are not checking things properly; not raising them and generally now wasting a lot of management time and resources due to this.

If you had problems with bank holiday or hours worked you should have raised these sooner with appropriate evidence.

These questions are a matter of fact. In the absence of any evidence to the contrary your going to have to trust their systems.

Also bear in mind OT can be worked and be getting paid but not appear on your slips yet. It may well appear next month which is thus showing as paid to them but not quite in your account yet.

Im sorry your meeting was an uncomfy experience. It sounds as if it was handled badly. There was absolutely no reason for you to be spoken to in that manner. Especially as it seems midway through someone else detected errors.

I personally think that you should look into this further. Dont be intimidated to not check the details again. If you would rather not then in future I would get your manager to sign at the end of each week the hours and overtime you have worked. Can you get in writing what your hourly rate should be and when exactly they pay extra (double time etc).

There is the chance you actualy don't understand whats going on.

Get your HR person to posts their side of the pay/hours.

Overtime is put on for the month worked. I've done no overtime in ages except the sundays. I had handwritten 'calculations' from them saying i've been paid 289 hours.. despite my payslips saying 259! i've only just realised it appeared to be my bank holiday day off, but bank holiday pay for 27th june 2010?!

erm sounds like u need to build up ur confidence. u cant go into a grievance meeting without having ur A-Z list of issues/complaints. as a senior they worked their 'im higher than u' on and it worked as u left scared and just wanted to 'end it'.

this way the company/manager, e.t.c gets off scott free while ur down on hours. ur not the first and sure as heck wont b the last unless u nip it in the bud now and get what ur owed. they will try every trick in the book to 'prove' ur wrong or shoot u down with lies. stick to your guns! dont EVER let them make u doubt urself when you know its money your owed for hours.

this is why you record EVERYTHING, even down to the people u spoke to and on which days, e.t.c CCTV will back it up!

Do you know or have you worked out how to prevent this from happening in the future, if not then you need to get into a routine of writing your hours down as soon as you see them and when you get paid see if the pay tallys up with what you worked and if not then enquire about it asap,

For the future I suggest you:

    1. check and clarify your hourly rate of pay
    2. check and understand the company policy on paying overtime for week days and weekends
3.thoroughly understand how details of your hours worked and overtime are recorded so that your wages can be calculated every month - ask if you can check it before the details are given to the Payroll dept.
    4. keep a work sheet, complete it every week and check it against your payslip as soon as you get it. If there are any possible discrepancies, check it with HR immediately

By having this level of understanding and written details of your hours worked, you will be more confident to question any further probs.

    Good luck.
