Told boss I have been underpaid, now they say I owe them over 40 hours!

Since I started working for this company, I noticed in my wage slips I've always been underpaid. I printed off all my hours and me and a team leader went through them and in the overtime book there are days where I have worked which my name was not in - what I expected.

However a recent call from the personnel manager says that I have been overpaid by apparently 42 hours!

This is ridiculous. I only work 5 hours a week and the rest is overtime - so I am unsure how a mistake like this can even be made.

I have a meeting Wednesday morning to discuss this; but I am wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences?

Id ask for a breakdown of these hours you have supposedly been overpaid by, also dont you have a clock in card/number you use when you start your shift so that would tell them how many hours you have worked, i reckon an error has been made somewhere along the lines

while your at it id sort out the hours you havent been paid for, have you been underpaid by alot

I can only guess that is what will happen on Wednesday. Our store doesn't have a clock in/out card; a serious flaw.

Thats the issue, I cant really work out how many hours it is. I only really do overtime on the Sunday and I noticed not all came up on my pay slip..

when doping shiftwork/overtime, always write down the hours and what week number ur on.

a retail company tried to shaft me with hours, until i produced my notes.

I'm not being facetious - this is a genuine question: how do you know you've been underpaid if you don't know how many hours you've done? How on earth do you expect to get the money owed to you if you cannot tell them which days you worked and what they haven't paid you for?!

I hope the meeting goes well for you, but you can't possibly put in a legitimate claim of underpayment if you don't know when and by how much you were underpaid!! You must be able to back up your claim, with a list of dates and times and how much you believe you're owed, or I cannot see you being successful at all.

    :)

they dont have a clock in system, how do they know whos in the store when for example theres a fire at the store and they need to do a roll call of the staff

This is very odd. I've worked at numerous Tesco's and they have all had clock in/out machines, even temporary staff had to use them.

Well on my last pay slip I was not put in for two Sundays I worked, so that prompted me to question it all; I already put in a claim a few months ago - but i cant really tell if anything came of it

I cant put it to the penny, because I get paid different on sunday and the old wage slips are faint enough you cant see whats on them!

the tesco is a metro but they do not have one. it was spoke of getting one, but it would cost to much they said...

to be honest, im just going to compare dates and go from there

Right so I've worked out that from the best of my knowledge, i've done just below 275 hours of overtime. My pay rate has gone up in stages by around £1.30 since I started working so I've done it for my current pay because on Sundays I get time and a half.

It would be easier to work out if my pay had stayed the same.. (not that i am complaining!) Anyway i've got a rough plan and im just going to have to see what happens tomorrow. to be honest i think it'll be a rushed process.

do i need to be careful with what i say (my wording of statements)? for example these times are to the best of my knowledge, but on the phone she said things like "you said you did 9 - 6 this day and we put you down for 9 - 7".

also; say they have lost my wage slips.. what can i do? i stressed it about 4 times to the members of staff i first consulted with if they would be okay and they said yeah; but time will tell...

I think I would start with the hours for each week get them agreed first.

Forget pay/overtime just focus on the hours worked

Once you agree all the hours you can then challange the actual pay for each of those hours.
