Personally i'd not go for the Vodafone... the "Voda360" Branding & software (or what ever it's called) slows down the phone (according to reports) Loads of people are very upset since they can't remove this software easily.
Vodafone is a store or last choice for many people with regards to android phones...Laters

If you are thinking of buying the handset only, then stick with the O2 sim, IMO, I bought my Desire from expansys and then got O2 simplicity with a bundled unilimited internet £5 (although I think that has now passed) but if you stick with them , and assuming the signal is ok in your normal travel patterns then they might give you a deal.I'm planning on getting a HTC Wildfire asap. I don't know much about the whole android thing or the upgrade to 2.2. My sim card is with O2 on contract but planning to get handset only. I'm not sure whether to get a PAYG on Vodafone and they pay to get the phone unlocked or spend another £30 and get a sim free phone. Given the move to 2.2 is one option better than the other in terms of getting this new system?

Beware though, "unlimited" internet packages from O2 can work out a lot more limited than the word unlimited would suggest, so do check the small print for data overage rates and make sure you don't hit them with your newfound excitement to join the world of smartphones! I love the HTC phones by the way, I've used them for about 5 yrs now, latest is the Desire Z, wonderful phone and a real keyboard for emails and forum posting in bed (!) too. If you do go for a wildfire or desire, look out for the slide it keyboard app, give it a try. It's like swype, and once you're used to it it is very fast indeed compared with tapping away at letters on the screen.0

Thanks for the advice, will probably just get a sim free handset then and pay a bit more.
My contract with O2 doesn't expire until July and I have an unlimited web bundle on this contract although my previous phone (Nokia 6303) wasn't a smart phone. Unfortunately I dropped it in water though the other day so it has died :-(0 -
02 has very little branding on the phone . Nice O2 Arena Wallpaper and an O2 web portal is all .

'Our Pay & Go Web Bolt On gives you 500MB UK data for just £7.50 a month.' - O2 think 500MB (less than one data CD, or about 50 mins of BBC iPlayer quality video, MP3's run to maybe 3-4MB each) is 'unlimited' (no, really, it is a horrible abuse of the term), so although 97% of users *do* use under 500MB/month, just make sure you're not one of the 3% getting hit with extra data charges. It used to be a 200MB cap - now that was *terrible*!
The smarter the phone, the riskier - if you have everything switched on like facebook, twitter and news feeds, automatic updates for apps, etc., then the phone may eat a bunch of that data allowance for you keeping your pocket updated for the moments when you go to look at the phone! Also be aware that using Maps/navigator with the GPS will constantly be pulling data for the maps/satellite shots, so a long drive could count to a chunk of your allowance.0 -

If your contract is pre 24th June this year it may be worth not altering the contract if you use quite a bit of data as you will probably find with a smartphone, i have the unlimited data bolt pre 24th June and tend to go way over 500mb it's nowhere near as restricted as the newer "unlimited" offers from o2 with 500mb fair usage, i have email confirmation from o2 that states as long as my contract stays the same i won't be changed to the new "unlimited" data allowance.0
