If Hubby is well qualified then his period of unemployment will hopefully be brief, and from reading some of the posts on here it seems that anything up to a year or more *may* elapse before you are at risk of an actual repossession.
There are lots of posts on the various sections relating to Money Saving, from hundreds of people who are managing to live a reasonable existence with earnings amounting less than £21,000 a year, why not read some of them and copy their blue print?. Unfortunately, if the worst should happen and you find your household with an a income down, a change of lifestyle and a review / downscaling of your outgoings isn't going to be an option, its likely to become a 'must' as I doubt any benefits which are paid to you, will equal that of a Degree based employment income.
Before you leap towards pushing the 'judgment' button, I prefer to think of it as reasonable 'common sense'"Dont expect anybody else to support you, maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse, but you never know when each one, might run out" - Mary Schmich0 -
Unless you are both working. I don't believe you can claim the child care tax credits.
I think there are exceptions - but yes, generally both have to be working to claim the childcare element.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Thanks Calley-if Dh is dismissed and can't get another job straight away he would do anything to get a bit of money to help out but I'm just trying to get an idea of what could help out on a short term basis.HSBC Visa-High interest-£2349.23 Nat West £2605.18

Thanks Chris- I really realise that we need to downscale our lifescale.. not a bad thing and I'm not high maintenance at all! Have been a regular on the old school board for a while-had huge childcare bills of £700 for a while whilst had two ps kids but was marginally still better off working after mat leave than not so you see I haven't been living the champagne lifestyle at all..Common sense is great- I just though 'you are having a laff' wasn't that helpful and didn't expect to be attacked when I was just looking for a bit of advice.HSBC Visa-High interest-£2349.23 Nat West £2605.18

Here you go again, attacking any advice you don't like by wielding the 'you are having a laff' rod.and didn't expect to be attacked when I was just looking for a bit of advice.
If you don't want contrasting opinions, and don't want to read the honest opinions of others, which may on occasion, conflict with your own and therefore post only on the basis of wanting people to agree with you and give you answers you want to hear then don't offer it up for debate on a public forum - chat to your friends instead!.
All I am saying, is, that if long term issues arise, then you may have to consider making changes and some of them may be significant. You wouldn't be the first person to move from a high priced property to a lower priced one, for example. You certainly wouldn't be the first person to cut back on their day to day outgoings. Clearly, for some unknown reason, you take offense at any suggestions like these, and go on the defensive - twice
Personally, I think the suggestion made by the other person, regarding sitting down and breaking down your costs and working out where any savings can be made, was a good one, and astute advice and certainly a suggestion that many people would identify with and have done. But again, it seems that its not what you wanted to hear, so you dismiss it, rudely. At the end of the day, the more reductions you can make at the earliest opportunity, the longer you will have to sort out the problem in hand, and for O.H to find alternative employment *if* the worst should happen.
You don't have to lead a champaign lifestyle (your words, not mine) to find and make these changes.
So far, all you seem to be doing is actively disputing any advice, which hints at you making any changes yourself, in preparation. Go on, read it all back and tell me i'm wrong, two posts have both individually mentioned making changes yourself, and you have outwardly attacked and dismissed both of them. What can't speak - can't lie.
Either way, if OH is unemployed, one saving grace is that you will be saving £xxx a month in Childcare, and for a lot of people, (taking your £700 example) that is approaching the cost of their mortgage.
Certainly if you are entitled to benefits then you should claim them, i'm not disputing that, but I still stand by the fact that whatever you will get, will not be anywhere near to the income received from a high paid job"Dont expect anybody else to support you, maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse, but you never know when each one, might run out" - Mary Schmich0 -
Chris I really seem to have offended you and apologies if you think I have come across as rude. Apologies for this-I'm so grateful for all advice and honestly I do realise that I need to make big changes-I know people can live on my money and have down sized their houses but on Monday all was well and now it's not so haven't slept much at all since Wednesday so probably not making myself very clear or coming across very well. My childcare bill was more than my mortgage-how crazy is that! Didn't mean to come across as being rude to people offering good advice. going to sign off now to try and sleep. My main priorities are my kids-I would walk on hot coals and eat bread and water as long as they are ok

No, i'm not offended, but I do speak my mind on occasion.
Its not a crime to ask for help - we all need to ask for help sometimes, but there is also a huge onus on us to help ourselves and better our own situation just as much as is possible in order to maximise the help that we do receive from elsewhere.
Just highlighting the fact. No hard feelings."Dont expect anybody else to support you, maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse, but you never know when each one, might run out" - Mary Schmich0 -
