Cat litter box - a playground....

Just changed cat litter from wood based pellets to Catsan....

3 of the kitties no probs, Fiona (silver black tiger girl LOL) decided to use one of the litter boxes as a playground/sandpit and is very busy since this morning making sure ALL of the Catsan is outside the box. She sits inside and paws it all out of the box, I put it back in and she starts again......

The box is quite deep inside as it is, will I have to get even deeper ones or will she stop?

  • It might be worth getting a covered one. My little terror liked to kick the litter all over the bathroom floor (not nice with wet feet when you get out of the shower). The covered boxes are a godsend, just don't forget to empty it, it's easy to forget when you can't see what's going on in there!

Simpler option, get a sturdy cardboard box like the ones cabbages come in & put the litter tray in there.Gives puss something to scratch on too!

  • Sounds like you've supplied her with a great new game! Or she really doesn't like the new litter and is telling you the best way she knows how other than peeing outside the tray............

Covered trays do make a difference but like some litters, not all cats like them.

it mightbe because you have changed the cat litter. why not mix the old cat litter with the new cat litter, until your cat gets use to it
Trinidad - I have a number of needs. Don't shoot me down if i get something wrong!!
  • My little guy did that with the catsan too - went everywhere!

I hated Catsan, threw half a bag out, horrible stuff.

Mine always tries to dig to Australia when she's got new litter in there - it's like a really fresh litter doesn't get a fresh poo until it's got a mahoosive hole to put it in.

Covered tray keeps the worst of it in.

I agree that putting the litter tray inside inside a large cardboard box will help, rather than buy a covered one. I did that for a while with one of my cats when the kids were small, but that was because he suffered extreme shyness and woulnt (couldnt?) GO if he thought we could see him. the kids took it upon themselves to decorate the box, and at various times his loo was located in - A Fairy Castle (daughters input), A Garage, a Spaceship, Toilet block (his door was marked 'Toms') a Sandcastle and a Supermarket with windows announcing various 'special offers' .

    Hi

At my local cat rescue charity, the litter trays are lined with newspaper with just a scoopful (about 2 or 3 handfulls) of cat litter on top.

This is still enough to give the cats the sensation of digging which they like... but it also makes the litter tray much easier to clean, much more hygienic, and of course saves a fortune in cat litter.

If you tried this then at least Fiona would only have a small amount of litter to play with, rather than finding a whole litter tray's worth all over the floor.
  • newspaper smells though - unless you empty entire tray after wees.....

I recommend covered boxes with flap on
